Hi. I have a question about transmission fluid temp. 2022 Ram 2500 4x4 with 68RFE. Was towing my 18ft double axle utility trailer yesterday. Had 600gal of water loaded. Trailer with water, somewhere around 6000lbs. In a mile and a half climb of around 700ft elevation gain on our dirt road while in 4wd, the transmission temp was at 210° when I arrived at home. I feel this temp was a little high. I am looking into installing one of the thermal bypass blocks. Does this seem like a good idea? Any downside? I am worried the thermostat in the stock block may not have been working.

Also, where would be a good place to purchase a block as Genos is on backorder. Thank You

That is warm but it is certainly not over heating. How often are you making this trip? There is a huge downside to the bypass, and that is your trans never (or takes for ever) to get up to operating temp. It is designed to operate between 170-220f.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it but that's me. There are a lot of products out there that are solutions looking for a problem

Delete it. Not sure about the newer ones but ats and revmax seem to be popular.

I've had the revmax for 3 winters now and no downsides. The transmission doesn't take that much longer to heat up without the thermostat in. Of course it will run cooler so ones definition of operating temp is different then another's. With my 66rfe anything over 70 degrees trans temp and shifts just fine.

Remember their is some fluid that is warmer then what your reading actually states.

When gm started putting these dumb things in their 6 speed transmissions they even came out with a technical service bulletin because the 195 degree thermostats they put in would cause rough shifting. If you had a transmission issue or if you burnt up your transmission. The new one would come with around a 145 degree thermostat.

Or leave it in and just change your fluid a lot more often then what the maintenance schedule says.

Just so we are clear, what I stated is not my definition or opinion, it's the actual specification that ATF 4 is designed to. If you have a different opinion that's fine but I quoted the actual specifications.

I make this trip at least once a week while we are at home. A out 9mos out of the year we will be towing our 8k camper from jobs items to jobs items, mo ing about every 3wks to a new location. Just dont want any temp issues in the heat. Just seems like it heated up quick in that mile and a half, even though its a good climb in 4wd.

That is a tough steep climb and I am guessing at low speed so your converter isn't locked and you are going to generate heat.

It is. I generally keep it locked into 2nd gear on most of it. Do you know if the Mopar fluid has to be used for the transfer case?

What I meant was that once you install the bypass the so called "operating temp" will be a lot lower then with the thermostat. But since you mentioned it where is this actual specification?

Honestly I don't see any big issue here. 210F is not that high especially if you are only talking a few minutes under a pretty extreme situation.
