Because I'm a lazy old man, I thought why not extract as much transmission fluid through the fill tube with my amazon hand pump? So I did, I managed to get 3.5 litres (sorry, Canadian here) out with the tube bottomed out and put the same amount back in. I'm wondering about the filter though, anybody have any thoughts on worrying about not replacing that? I will probably do another 3.5 litre swap in a month and then do it every once in awhile to get complete turnover and maintain . It was so easy and clean to do. Am I kidding myself here?

I'd want the filter changed at least for the 1st change, which has the most contamination by initial break in wear in addition to normal wear of clutches and gears.

If filters use organic media such as paper, then they should be changed at every oil change because organic media decomposes with age and heat. Think of a newspaper left out for years - it yellows, becomes brittle, and crumbles. That's age hardening via oxidation.

Like he said, you need synthetic filter and a metal thread upgrade, then your method is as sound as guys with a drain bolt who do the same thing. Here is the thread in synthetic filter options. The sump filter will likely last 100k of miles, the canister filter is the issue, even if the synthetic one gets contamination the bypass will open. Find the energy to do it one time, protect that rfe.

Since you're talking about a fill tube that means you probably have the RFE transmission. That has two filters (plus a magnet) - best bet is to buy an aftermarket pan with a drain plug then drop the pan, replace both filters (be really careful about the suction tube seal), put the new pan with a drain back up. Then next time you change the fluid you can pre-drain the pan for minimal mess, or if you're not touching filters you can still just drain the pan & refill.

Anybody know if there's a synthetic main (flat) filter out there? I haven't seen one. I know it's not for the valve body, but would still use one.

It's a sump filter and the oem is synthetic. Cut mine open after ten years, still fresh and pliable. My canister was shot.
