Does it slip when you drive in tow haul mode?

First check fluid, for condition and smell if it is fresh or burnt, and check the level on dip stick. How long ago was trans serviced?

Lot's of reasons for transmission slipping, the question is what route to take. Clutches are the first thought, but that is worst case news so what difference does it make? If you are dropping the transmission anyhow, you are rebuilding it anyhow. Just ask a local mechanic what it would be for a rebuilt rfe with new valve body and solenoid.

It is possible there is a leak in VB causing issue, or SP and causing issue, but there isn't a guarantee on it.

Try tow haul, if that works it might be VB. If the VB is leaking, the extra pressure of TH might just make the slipping go away, if it is clutch packs that wont matter.
