Hi everyone,
My 2011 Ram 2500 HD with the 5.7 engine is slipping in 4th gear and slightly in 3rd as well, both when cold and hot. The issue hasn’t changed after a year of driving. It happens going uphill, downhill, and on flat roads.
However, when I press the gas more, the RPMs don’t spike much—maybe just around 500 RPM higher—and the truck accelerates without any obvious slipping. Still, it feels like 4th gear just isn’t engaging properly.
5th gear shifts in a bit hesitantly but holds fine without slipping. The truck has high mileage, around 320,000 km (200,000 miles), but there are no metal shavings in the transmission fluid. The issue hasn’t gotten worse over time.
When engine braking downhill, there’s no slipping. Also, if I manually select 4th gear and step on the gas, it feels like 4th gets locked in and there’s no slipping either.
Could someone help me figure out what this might be? Could it be the solenoid? Valve body? Or is it time for a rebuild?

Thanks a lot for any info!

Sounds like your tranny is past its prime :( If your at the point of thinking about replacing it or spending serious money on it you might wan't to try an additive (cue the trolls hehe) I think Lucas makes one. Check out Scotty Kilmers you tube videos on tranny additives. And yeah im not a mechanic in any way shape or means.....so you know advice is always worth what you pay for it...:)

Well said I’m only 34K for mileage so I don’t think she’s beyond her prime yet but hey no mechanic here either I think I just might get a second opinion other than mine

only 34k on a fourteen year truck? You must be using it to pull the lawnmower :)

Did you buy this truck new in 2011 or when?
What is the maintenance history on the tranny?

Sounds like time for a rebuild there, unless he had it done recently and someone did improperly, Sure sounds like a valve body going South, but I am no mechanic.

Damn, that's some low mileage.
Yeah I leased it first and went to work and gym. It does seem like it holds gears more then I want and maybe a little clunky at times.

When my former 6 speed Ram went into limp mode it was the solenoid pack. I replaced it myself. It was a $300 part (about 10 years ago).
