After a lot of procrastination, mostly about price, I finally ordered the TrekStep bumper step for my Ram. Came in, and took maybe 15 minutes to install. Just 5 bolts and no drilling. It seems to work well, with a couple of concerns, and holds my lard ass with ease.
When opening and closing it makes a really loud and obnoxious clank. Closing is much worse and sounded like it was hitting the truck. It wasn't, but it was still very irritating. They put a couple of really hard rubber stops on the arms, but they are for just that, stopping travel, not damping impact. And the bottom one only sticks out maybe 1/8". You can see the upper one at the top of the pic sticks out maybe 1/2". I thought, not engineered very well for the price. I dug around the garage and found some desk corner guards that are semi-hard cellular rubber. Cut and glued a couple of pieces in strategic locations, and voila, now it's pretty quiet.
Not that pretty, but I'll try and find something more pleasing looking next time I'm at the hardware store.
But I also noticed something else that concerned me as to their engineering chops.
Ignore the glue. I hadn't cleaned off the excess yet. But look at the angle on that left arm. WTF?
Don't know if that'll cause issues down the road, but does concern me of wobbling developing over time. Color me unimpressed.
I also considered getting their side step, even more expensive. But not sure I ever will now. I don't mind spending money on stuff I want, just not that impressed with having to mod new items to work as I think they should've from the factory. YMMV
My Fumoto swivel drain plug came in too, but it won't get installed until the next oil change.
There's more pics of both on my website if you're interested. Click the link in my sig.
