My wife just rolls her eyes at me, especially when I want to run out at 11 at night to grab a cup of coffee to just listen to my stereo. ;)

Okay this has been a fun day! After talking to JL I decided to call hybrid where I was referred to Clifton a support specialist and tuning expert. He talked with me for a while and recommended some settings to start with.

First he recommends linkwitz 24dB curves for all channels
Phase to 0 all channels

Then to set crossovers at :
L1pros 6.3k-open bypass low pass
L3v2s 250-6.3k
L6v2 60-250
Sub 25-60
6x9 65-5k

I made the adjustments and its sounds good tweets were in your face and too bright. Now doesn't hurt to listen. Lol stage sounds good. Next he recommends RTA. Making some progress and learning about slope curves.

Right to the source, nice!

60 for the mid-bass/sub? I think you are asking the mid-bass to do alot more work while not making the sub work hard enough. Give 80 a try, it may sound a little thinner at the doors but your sub should offset it.

Funny. I was just reading a thread/poll and mass majority of the guys on diyma have theirs crossed at 80, too!

I guess it's sorta the magic number across the board...

Oh damn that hit deep, exactly what my wife says lol.

Lol!

Good to know that I am not the only one! Went out at 10:30 last night to listen to the 'Angela's Ashes' soundtrack, AGAIN! I can't believe that a great sq system as lead me to enjoy classical music, either that or I am just getting old, lol!

The fact that our wives let us get away with it pretty much says we are old. ;)

Thanks Trout, I thought the same. I am going to bump up sub and l6v2 to 80. Yeah it's great that the wives get it! I am certainly having fun with it! Now I need to RTA next and see what happens. To be continued... Lol

Hipps, my x-overs are very similar to what cliff recommends. I think the sub/midbass x-over depends on the subs. Many subs become less transparent and pull the stage back when they're crossed higher. Luckily my MKIVs can be crossed at 90 and still sound like the bass is coming from the windshield.

Brad, are you doors and subs overlapped? Or do you have the doors coming in at 90? Clifton did say that the hybrid SE,s in 3 and 4" could be crossed higher like 7-7.5k in the dash. I only have the l3v2 so he recommends 6.3k range. I just thought 60 might be a little low for the sub...it sounds good... But I am gonna try 80 and bring doors to 80 unless anyone recommends some overlap between them. Makes your head spin lol. :roflsquared:

I've tried overlapping them and I got a nice strong midbass but at the cost of clarity. I listen to a lot of fast heavy metal and with them overlapping, I got some muddiness. Try using a less steep slope at the mid and sub x-over point rather than over lapping. Like -6 or -12 DB. I think one of the tunes I sent you had overlapping frequencies actually.

At the end of the day, it's install/equipment dependent.

That's a good idea! I did that with the sub so it will hit a little lower on high pass, I think I used a12db slope there. I will bump sub to 80 and high pass doors at 80 with a 12db slope. Get the best of both worlds lol. If needed I will bump it to 6db. Thanks again. Slope starting to make some sense. :roflsquared:

So you got me thinking Hipps about overlapping frequencies today so I tried a little experiment.

I returned my crossovers to where they were when I was running a 2-way setup and then crossed over my mids in the range where the mids play flat, 330 - 5k with no regard to other speaker crossovers points. I have to say, I was VERY pleased with the result. The sound in itself did not change but it improved the imaging considerably while maintaining the forward stage.

After bouncing back and fourth from my original "Golden" config to this new config a few times, overlapping wins and will remain.

I believe this to be a result of the distance between the mid-bass in the doors and the mids in the dash. Turning the mids into "complimentary" speakers seems to me to be a very nice solution for anyone dash mounting mids in the factory location.

Ps. You might be thinking, why not run all speakers in the range where they run flat, I tried that because I had to know! Blah! Not recommended but it was a good lesson. ;)

Too bad some of us don't live in range of each other. Be nice to have some of you listen to my setup and give me your opinions. I think my system sounds great but with the talk of front stage, imaging, and timing, makes me wonder how much better the system could sound.

That would be helpful if we could audition one another's system. You could however visit get togethers, shows and events and get a better understanding of what a system with a DSP sounds like. Once heard, you'd probably run out and buy one. ;)

Nice Troutspinner! Like I stated before I posted where hybrid recommend I start. My mids run from 250-6.3k and then the sails run 6.3-wide open. I crossed my doors at 80-250 with a 12db slope and sub is set from 25-80 with a 12db slope. So far so good I just need time to RTA and begin playing with the Eqs. I am glad you are experimenting as I am starting to see how much fun it is playing around with the settings or slope and crossover. I just need to learn how to EQ properly. I am happy you like the new config! I am loving my new setup as well!!! :favorites13:

I tried grabbing one of those JBL MS-8 but I was an unlucky one and got refunded... :D
