Uconnect Firmware Updates, Who's Good at Reading Code?

OK I have a 2015 Ram 1500 with Uconnect 8.4RA3 so for a while now i've been pretty bent that Uconnect came out with all these really fancy new features for 2016, using the same hardware. However, Uconnect is being a **** and won't release these new features for the older uconnect 8.4's claiming "hardware differences".

I know that's BS, I have no doubt in my mind the 8.4 Uconnect hardware hasn't changed yet. So i finally managed to get my hands on a 2016 Uconnect 8.4RA3 Firmware file, and I'm somewhat tech savvy, so I opened up the ISO files and started comparing, a vast majority of the txt files contain identical contents. The one that i found most interesting was the MFG version file, which contained info on the bootloader and a couple other things related to updating. What i found was they're the exact same between the 2015 and 2016 Firmware versions, which leads me to believe that, yes, the hardware is the same, and they're even using the same versions of bootloaders.

I'm contemplating making my own firmware update file by swapping some of the 2016 firmware files in place of the older 2015 files, but that's as far as my tech knowledge goes. I know i run a huge risk of bricking my Uconnect, but if anyone who has a bit more computer / coding knowledge could get in touch with me, I can share the firmware ISO's maybe they can browse a little deeper and come up with something a bit more solid then what i'm thinking of doing.

Some of the main features i'd be looking to gain are the drag & drop menus/icons, and the rear view camera switch. Also something interesting, the 2015 uconnect files, most of them are old, like april 2014 old, where as the 2016 files are nice and updated from August 2016, so i'm sure they're jam packed with new features and bug fixes.

I have a 2016 RA4 in my 14 Ram. It works fine all the drag and drop different themes ect. My backup camera works but I don't have the button to enable the camera whenever I want so I am not sure it will come up on your screen if you are somehow able to figure out how to switch your firmware. I belive that would most likely be something controlled by the BCM. The 16 radios do have a lot of pretty nice features. They have 7 different screen themes,5 different map themes, the do not disturb phone feature with auto text back.if wanted, you can also set it so when on XM all songs start from the beginning, album art and some others. If you are unsuccessful in your attempt to swap files you can always just find a 2016 RA3 or RA4 and install it in your truck.

Hey guys,

First thing is that the ISO firmware files are encrypted and the truck will only update if the file if the security key matches what mopar used. So before you get too excited, you would need to find a way to get around that first.. and even then, you may very well just brick your radio.. It's probably better to just look for a 2016 radio and swap them out.

Good luck!

OP what do you do for a job? Should we can you a **** since you cant divulge your companies proprietary information i doubt it!

figure it out!

There are certain things that can and cant to and upgrading to the '16 features isnt one of them. there is actual hardware also.

The first issue to overcome is the checksum security just prior to flashing. There is someone on the XDA forums who toyed with this idea, but I don't think he carried through with it. It could be an expensive mistake.

He had the idea to begin the flash process with the correct firmware file and then after the security check quickly swapping USB drives to load the firmware files you want to use.

As far as I know, no one has tried. I've looked into it, but haven't had the time to come up with a safer way.

It sucks that we can't update ours to what they are offering now. My wife's 2016 jeep GC has all the bells and whistles. When she changes the station in Sirius from one preset to another preset station it starts playing the song from the beginning.

You could take the radio out of her GC and put it in your RAM.

I am just hoping the CarPlay 8.4s will be able to be swapped into our older trucks with no issues.

I wish FCA was more open to updating older vehicles uconnect. The 8.4 version 4 uconnects looks pretty damn awesome. I would love the android and apple play in my 15 Truck
