So this morning I head over to the car wash with my 2016 Big Horn 1500.I stopped to pay and I get this alert on my radio screen about the dreaded Uconnect update. You guys know what I'm mean by this .I get the "install now" "schedule later" deal.I don't make any selection, since I obviously am not going to do this at the car wash, but rather when I get home.I go through the wash and I get to the area where the self service vacuums are.I turn off the truck, close the door and get out to get the vacuum, and I hear the dreaded door lock sound. It seems the update locked me out.Long story short...the manager gave me a ride home to get my spare key and I got back and was able to unlock the doors.I drive home, turn off the truck, and the radio won't turn off and that's where I am at this point.I feel that FCA has put us in a potentially dangerous situation with this stupid update. If the time of day or location was different this may not have ended in the same way.Guys,if you leave your vehicle be sure to take your phone and your keys or you can be stranded with no way home and no way to reach out for help

Make sure your dealer, FCA, UConnectCares, etc all know about this.

Just more reason for them to ditch the horrid OTA setup and let us install our own darn updates.

I got word of the update online, I think as I was exploring the Uconect website. I downloaded the file they recommended but was unable to get my system to recognize it. Could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I then opened my flash drive and realized that the download put the necessay file into a folder. So the system was not "seeing" the file. I took the file out of the folder and re-installed it on the flash drive and began the update process earlier this evening. It worked but took 45 minutes. About 20 of which were when I accidentally choose the "Reinstall update" button and had to suffer through the process again.

So it all worked, I just ahven't had time to try to see what visible changes are there.

The current update is 17.43.01. At least that's what the process told me. For a 2017 Ram 1500 4x4 CrewCab Bighorn.

After owning my 2018 Sport for over a year, I still haven't figured out what the benefit of UConnect is other than something that is a pain in the ass and something else to ***** about.

Originally, I thought it was just something that came with the truck. Then I found out it was a pay-to-play service. I've looked at all the literature and still cant figure out what more I would get out of it other than already having bluetooth and nav without UConnect.

Am I missing something?

Cheers

Bob

2018 trucks got CarPlay/Android Auto. If I had those, I would agree UConnect is useless.

I have a 2017 without CarPlay/Android Auto. To me the only advantage to UConnect is the ability to custom reply to texts via voice recognition, but some people are saying just using the Android Auto app might allow for that (I have not tested it myself)

I refuse to pay for the service because, IMHO, its a safety issue to be limited to pre-canned replies....I either have to concentrate on listening to the list of replies to choose from, or even worse glance at the screen to choose one. They should be giving it for free to everyone, or get rid of the ability to reply altogether.

The rest of the stuff UConnect provides (remote start, remote lock, Yelp, etc) is just useless fluff, IMHO.

I both listen to and create/send messages via Siri without having Uconnect. I can also listen to voicemail.

Yes, Siri "eyes free" or whatever it is does work, but I have an Android phone :)

There are a few benefits to Uconnect for Pre-2018 (excluding voice to text as it can be done without the service using the "Siri" button).
  1. Send 'n Go - Send navi destinations from your phone using the Uconnect app (can be done in motion too)
  2. Remote start from distances that the key fob does not reach
  3. GPS finding of vehicle (although at least with apple it recognizes when you left your vehicle and stores it on the map). I have used this to catch my dealership in a lie saying they started working on it, when it hadn't been moved since they initially parked it. You would think they would be smart enough to realize this (I didn't call them out on it, just something I am keeping track of).

To me, being able to copy the address from a website, or my contacts and paste it in the Uconnect app and send it to the truck is the best feature. I often do this when at a light (if you try typing the GPS forgets what you started to type as soon as you move, so you have to start all over at the next light). It is much faster than trying to manually enter the address. I also do this while waiting on the wife to finish getting ready, so when we leave I just have to accept the Send 'n Go address.

Your google assistant should be able to do the same... The button is supposed to initiate the google assistant when you long press it (short pressing activates the vehicles voice command, long pressing activates the phones voice commands).

Unless I am dreaming on my 2015 the Satellite Radio seems to be working good again with very few drop outs like it did before the last release.

Anyone else notice this?
