I think I finally talked to the right person today. Service manager agrees with me that 2 quarts in 1586 miles is excessive. To date truck has 4825 miles and have used 4 1/2 quarts. That's with changing oil at 3240. Kind of frustrating.

That is a lot. Assuming you have a hemi 5.7? I've read on the Durango forums of some hemi's burning oil, but in a few cases turned out to be the inaccuracy of the dip stick. Weird as it's random. Hope your dealer takes care of you properly.

Well if he's acknowledged the issue then next step is diag and repair! However if its not an external leak (which I can only imagine you would have noticed by now) then you may be in for some major engine work... I don't know the lemon laws but could you swap that truck out for a new one? **** never goes back the same or as pristine after a head gasket job for example.


BTW have you opened ur rad cap/reservoir to check for oil?

I'd get a catch can to see how much oil is going back through the engine, but I would remove it when I had the dealer look at it. get an answer first if they are going to fix it, if not run a catch can.

Maybe faulty PCV, best case anyhow. if it is you difnitly want that fixed asap, or it can cause big issues.

I had a Ford 5.8 and it ate oil like that, funny thing it was a very clean running engine, oil was rarely nasty at my 5k interval. Dealer said it was way within "normal". It got so I just planned on dumping a quart at the 1500 mark and always did. To date best truck I ever had until my Ram. Look for an oil with a low NOACK, Penzoil Ultra and redline are too lowest NOACK's I've seen. NOACK is evaporation rate, low means your oil will evap less then an oil with a high number. NOACK numbers are generally available for all oils.

Yeah I will be dropping it off hopefully on Monday. He told me to bring in my written log and they will diag. I have checked for leaks and look at reservoir/rad cap. Hopefully by Monday they will have my 4500 fixed. (DEF)

My 2014 5.7 1500 barely uses a drop. Last time I went 6k miles and put in maybe 1/4 of a quart.

Damn. Thats a lot. I used 2/3 of a quart in 5500 miles.

My 2012 5.7 used some oil. About 1 liter per 4000km

That's really excessive. My 2012 with 30k miles uses about 4-6oz in 6K miles and most of that is captured in my catch can. I have yet to need to top-off between oil changes at the IVEC recommended oil change intervals.

The PCV will pump a fair amount of blow-by (what the catch can collects), but unless you have a ahead gasket issue, I'm thinking the break-in on your rings didn't go very well.

I got my truck back today. According to Chrysler standards oil consumption isn't a big deal until after the 7500 mile break in period. The dealer is having me come in every 500 miles until 7500 to track consumption. It took almost a year to get the first 5,000 mile. So in about 6 months I should have answer.

Certainly unlike anything I've experienced with (2) 5.7's,,,

The GOOD thing is they are willing to try and monitor/come up with a conclusion at some point and time,,,

What's your driving like? You have extremely low miles and don't seem to put them on fast. It's possible that an engine can use more oil during break-in, so are you doing fairly frequent very short trips? Is the truck even getting to operating temp? Or do you just not drive it often at all..

MyOhFive that is funny that you said that. I got the truck about a year a go. Most of the time I just drive it a few miles a day to work and back maybe fishing on the weekend. Going on a 600 miles road trip this weekend decided to take the Ram.

Yeah short drives are killer on engines lol. I'm not judging, I have a short commute (which I'm not happy about, mpg killer too lol) but I have noticed I get more oil in my catch can doing short trips than when I only take it on longer trips.
