Vr/phone switch install?

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 Express with a 3.0 Uconnect out of a 2017. I've already done the rearview mirror upgrade and now I want to install the VR phone switch into the steering wheel. My question is do I have to remove the steering wheel just for this switch or can it be done with just removing the airbag and the front face of the steering wheel? I have no interest in installing the switches behind the steering wheel just the front facing VR / phone switch.
