In reference to this thread:

http://www.ramforum.com/f44/limited_slip_install-29178/

The dealer finally emailed me back. Keep in mind I know the part numbers I need. On factorymoparparts.com the anti spin diff is part number 68053299AD for $420.90 and the carrier bearings part number 68067933AA for $59.11. apparently they think I either need to change the whole axle housing or the gears as well.

Hi Jxxxxx,
I got your request for a price on changing the rear differential on your Ram. There are 2 ways we can go. Either replace the whole axle housing and all
the parts for a total of $4,250.00 plus tax. Or we can reuse the same axle and change all the gears and bearings for a cost of $2280.65 plus tax. If this is something you want to get done we will need to inspected the rear differential first so we can order the correct parts.

Thank you
xxxx xxxxxxxxx

You should email them back and ask if that price includes the lube for your @ss :hump:

LOL!! The big problem I'm having is finding another shop here to do it. I called Lee Myles Transmission and Drivetrain shop and they sounded clueless when I was describing what I wanted to do. I'm tempted to try it myself.

This was my response. We'll see how it goes from here:

Thanks for the reply xxxx. I know somebody that had this done on their 2012 Ram with the same 3.55 gears and open rear axle that I have. They reused the same gears. All that was needed was the factory Mopar anti-spin differential part # 68053299AD and a new set of carrier bearings part # 68067933AA, plus the obvious fluids and friction modifier. Looking at various factory Mopar parts websites online the differential costs $420.90 and the carrier bearings cost $59.11. He also said it was 3 hrs of labor. Could you check into this and get back to me? I appreciate the help.

Sometimes I really doubt the intelligence of service advisors. Over 2 grand, really? They need to implant some basic math tests as pre hire qualifications for these guys

to bad you dont live in Alaska. I have set many gearsets and swapped carriers for lsd/posi/auburn.

I wouldnt describe it as hard but if you dont know what your doing it can be disasterous.

When I was looking into the LSD upgrade, every dealer and online Mopar retailer told me that I needed to replace the ring & pinion and all bearings etc. when swapping in the LSD.
The dealers have to follow what Chrysler recommends for any service.
I'm not surprised that the dealer told you this. They won't touch it unless you follow their guidelines.
That drivetrain shop should know how to change out the diff. If they're clueless, run away!

I see a lot of people talking about the LSD and switching to it, my question is how do you know what you have? My truck said it came with anti-spin diff but I am not sure what it does and what is better the LSD or anti-spin. Sorry for the dumb question!

You're good then. LSD and anti-spin are the same thing. There's clutches in the rear of an LSD, when you loose traction they engage and provide power to the other wheel. With an open diff and TC turned off, you can get stuck and spin one rear tire and the other will do nothing. There's other types as well such as a Detroit Locker, TruTrack, spool.

Cool thanks for the insight. Hope you can find someone to do yours for less than 4K, you could probably get a pro charger/install for that LOL

Yeah, I'm not paying 4 grand. I'll go 1 grand tops. If nobody can do it I'll wait until the 8 speeds are available in the Express and order it up the way I want.

A grand to just get a LSD swapped in is crazy money.
I'm into mine for under $700.

When you replace your carrier you must replace your bearings. They are pressed on.

Yeah from working in a dealership they want to do everything incase you 1. ever need warranty work done and 2. if they don't put it back right it will howl like a mother f*****. but if you have a good tech he should be able to do it no problem with just LSD and bearings.

Well, it's getting better. The dealer admitted they screwed up the original estimate. They're now down to $880 and they warranty the work. I know several of the tech's at this dealership and they do good work, apparently the service advisor is just a bit confused to be nice. Waiting on an estimate from Hartman Driveshaft and then I'll make my decision.

And another update. I emailed the dealer how much I can get the parts for online, and their parts guy matched the prices. I told them to go ahead and order the parts. Looks like this is getting done in the $700 range now with factory warranty. I'm stoked!! Thanks for all the help and advice guys.
