I have a black truck and I am crazy. So I just walked past my truck and looks like the sprinklers hitting it. Water spots all over.

My question is the longer you let them sit the harder to remove? The truck has a coat of wax on it and quick detailers in between.

I am hoping just to wash it and they disappear

Not really I have water spots on my windows bad and the clay bar won't take them off I got them all off my paint when I first picked up my truck by using a light compound

A shiny one
Get them off as quickly as possible!! The longer they are on the surface, the easier it becomes for those dissolved minerals in the spot to etch into the clear coat, making easy removal impossible.

Methods to remove water spots, in order from first to last resort:

  • 50/50 vinegar and water
  • Clay Bar
  • Hand Polishing
  • Machine Polishing
  • Wet sanding
  • Angle Grinder
  • Blow Torch
  • Chainsaw
  • Drive off a cliff

We were visiting in Denver last fall and I left my SSR in our friends driveway for the night and the underground sprinklers kicked on in the morning and misted the truck for a very long time in the August Denver heat, what a crust it had on

no panic, just a face cloth and a gallon of straight vinegar and scrubbed and flushed the crusties off and then washed it down with soap and water and all was well, I have had things similar to this happen before. My friend was just in a panic as he thought I might have to repaint the SSR to make it look right again.

use a no wash spray cleaner such as stripper juice. water spots used to drive me nuts on my motorcycle but that stuff works really well. just do a normal wash then after drying give the truck a quick second wash using the spray and a soft cloth and it'll usually dry spot free and the spray will actually shine it up good too. also works well on chrome

In many municipal water supplies, water spots are not just mineral deposits!

We moved from North Little Rock last year. The water there left very quick water spots. If you didn't remove very quickly, it etched the paint! Clay bar would remove the mineral deposit, but leave a very light remainder from the etching that required polishing to completely remove.

Best defense- alway completely dry city water off the vehicle and be sure you have a good cost of sealant.
