My 2014 hemi ram with 42,000 miles has a whining noise that sounds slightly metallic. I removed the belt and the noise is still there. Any ideas on what to check next? I'm hoping it's not the transmission pump

Dealership thought it might be the torque converter but told me to drive it until it got worse. It never did get worse so I took it back in again and they are replacing the whole transmission but had to order it and wont be in until Nov 9th

My truck had a whining noise associated with RPMS also, it sounded like this " Slow down, you drive too fast" and sometimes it sounded like " No wonder you go through a tank of gas every 3 days".. Dealership said it wasnt a warranty item and I was on my own.

So the new transmission is making the same noise, im not real sure its the transmission at this point but now the dealership is saying this is just a normal sound the 8 speed makes. I can hear the whine over my loud exhaust

It’s probably the oil pump. There was an issue around 2014 with faulty oil pumps that would whine.

Using a stethoscope would narrow it down.

I told them i read about an oil pump issue also. They used a stethoscope and narrowed it down to the alternator, after i told them i took the belt off and it still made the noise.

I have a whine but it's my AC compressor. Goes away when I turn it off.

41k on my 2014. Just going to wait until something breaks.

I too have a whine with the AC on. Goes away when I push the AC button. It's annoying but the dealer said the system looks okay. Blows ice cold in the Florida summer heat

I keep reading about a Star report for the oil pump issue but when i asked the tech he searched but couldnt find anything. Is there a way to search these online?

Sometimes they remove star cases for whatever reason. I’ll check tomorrow at work and see if it’s there or not.

Is there any risk to pulling the torque converter bolts and starting the truck? That would be a quick way to tell if the transmission is even making the noise or if it is the engine

I was just talking about disconnecting the torque converter from the flywheel. Nothing that would allow fluid out

Haven't even looked at the bottom of the 8 speed to tell you the truth but on most older transmissions you could leave the bell housing bolts in and just remove the bolts physically connecting the torque converter to the flywheel. The everything would still be connected and the engine could be started but would not spin the imput shaft on the transmission

It hasn't changed, you can still disconnect the convertor and slide it back enough to clear the flywheel. There's 3 pairs of bolts on the convertor that are easy to get at after you remove the cover on the bellhousing.

I used a stethoscope myself and im pretty sure it is the torque converter as the soumd is loudest on the bell housing. I asked the dealer and the torque converter comes as a unit with the transmission.
