I used my winch twice since I’ve bought my new 2019 PW.

yesterday, I go around the front and the winch cable is loose. the winch was in the locked position which I thought was odd and I could pull the cable freely in the locked position. So I tried to lock the winch in both positions, however the cable is freely pulling out by hand in both positions..

I get my remote and hook it up, I can’t get the winch to reel in or reel out, it just spins.. Finally I get the lever directly in the center ( in between locked and unlocked) and the winch engages and starts reeling in. so I get a appointment lined up at the dealer to get it checked out.

today I go outside, the locked position and the release position are working perfect and it reels in and out perfectly with the remote. So I am going to cancel my appointment at the dealer, or should I not?

I’m used to worm gear winches and this is the first winch I’ve had one like this, Is it normal for these winches to be finicky? Is it because lack of use?

i think something might have just knocked it open slightly. Once you noticed it and started messing with it, put it back in the right position.

I have used my winch a total of 3 times.

2 pulling people out of the sand at the beach
1 to pull out a dead catcus lol.

Each time after i always unspool the entire winch, and respool it back around the drum in nice, even layers.

After my first use of the winch I stopped in at 4wheel parts to talk to their guy, he came out and showed my there is an silver release handle, although I think the winch is mounted upside down in the power wagon. He used that to release my cable and showed me some kinks in the cable that bound it up from use. You may want to see if yours is loose or can get bumped against.

I've pulled more stumps with my winch than anything else. Normally I do as you did and respool it nice, but this last time I was in a bit of a hurry. I gotta unwind it and redo it again before winter sets in.

its not upside down. its a overwound foot forward configuration. yes theres a gear shift lever that basically just switches gears between nuetral and engage

IIIRC, I don't think the factory warranty covers the winch for some reason. Winch description here: https://www.warn.com/the-ram-power-wagons-warn-winch. If I'm not mistaken, I think they come from factory without the wire rope installed and dealer installs it as part of the "processing scheme." If so, some kid working at dealer could have spooled on incorrectly. Free end of rope spools off and on top of drum.
