Has anyone tried modding an H9 light to replace the H11 to get more light from the non-projector quad headlights?

Yep you trim one or 2 of the tabswithside cutters and she slides in. Ifound a thread online somewhere which was a project for some import car, but the H9 info was the same.
Found it: H11 to H9 fog light conversion - Mazda 6 Forums : Mazda 6 Forum / Mazda Atenza Forum

Thanks. I know I can make it fit physically, and its much more light, but wondering if anyone has done it on a newer Ram. I'm wondering if the extra wattage of the bulb causes any problems like bulb outs or such.

So, I did it this afternoon. Really easy mod and no problems with the truck accepting the higher watt H9 bulbs.

They're obviously brighter now, but its still daylight here. I'll have to wait till dark to see if its all I need or not.

For anyone that's interested, H9 bulbs are 65W and put out about 2200 lumens as opposed to the stock H11 that is 55W and put out around 1400 lumens.

Not quite HID territory, but almost twice as bright and only cost about $25 for the pair of bulbs.

I'll see if I can get a pic later. I didn't take any stock pics to compare. I'm sure it will be better, just not sure if it will be better enough.

It seems like a lot of car manufacturers are using these H11 bulbs in their headlights now. Everyone that has them complains. The cars that use the H9's don't seem to get the complaints. Aside from the little tab you have to shave off and the light output, they are physically identical.

I didn't get any pics, but I can confirm they're really bright. I had to aim them down a tic because they were bothering people. For the price of bulbs I recommend anyone saving up for HID's just go do this mod while you're waiting. Its really cheap. Just get standard H9 bulbs and pop them in. I don't feel like I need any more light now. Just gotta see how long they last. Hopefully at least a year.

My lows seem just as bright as my high's now. The high's are just aimed up higher.

Here's a chart of the different bulb types with their light output. Explains why the H9's are so much brighter:

What particular bulb did you use? I wonder if you can run a 9006 halogen bulb in the fogs without burning up the wires. I just want brighter and whighter lights. It doesnt have to be hids.

I haven't looked at the fogs yet. I just bought a standard Sylvania H9 bulb from my local auto parts store and modded it slightly so the plug from the truck fit into it. They look almost identical anyway. Just had to cut a little tab off that blocked the plug from seating.

Here's a video:

I didn't have to cut the metal tab in the video, the bulb fit in my housing anyway. Just had to do the mod for the plug.

Just looked into the fogs. They already use a halogen 9006, so the upgrade mod here will be 9012 bulb and just trim the tab to fit them. 9012's are HIR's so that should more than double the light output with the same wattage. That'll be my next mod. LOL

Then the high-beam 9005 can be modded to the 9011 HIR. Guess I'll order those bulbs and pop them all in next chance I get.

Its nice to finally see where I'm going at night and not have to spend big money to do it.

I agree with you on the H9s. For the price, it was the single best mod I ever did to my truck! I am now more than happy with the stock quads. Didn't have to trim the metal tab either, and a pair of needle nose pliers/pocket knife was enough to cut out the plastic tab in the electrical socket.

How long ago did you install them? Trying to get an idea how long they will last.

Eh... I installed mine about three weeks ago, so I don't really have a handle on that yet. I have definitely been running my head lights less than I normally do to drag them out though. I am one of those people that runs down the road with the headlights on most times, day, or night, but now I just do running lights until dusk.

If I were you I would just swap in the H9s. They are quite "white" as the lower output H11s are dim, and thus make it seem kind of yellow. If you are looking for the blue hues you might as well get a set of HID drop ins w/o projectors, and be one of "those" people.

I just like white and bright. I dont want blue at all. Maybe one of you can post a pic of h9 vs h11 color comparison.
