Amsoil is a good oil but I would never run my oil oil filter that long. On the other hand a larger oil filter fits just fine in newer Rams. Mine is 2018 and I run the larger boss purolator filter. Just from the look and fit of the mount, the car was designer for a larger filter. Smaller filter is an afterthought. The larger filter to me looks proper when installed based on every other car I looked at. I was going to cut the small one and compare material but I threw it in the trash and kids diapers in the la heat made the experience of looking for it not pleasant.

I tend to agree with that, just because something might last that long doesn't mean that would be a good lubrication strategy, especially with the finicky 5.7.

But here's the thing, I believe 10k miles is a good lubrication strategy and I believe paper filters simply don't last that long. Now, sometimes people get caught up in life and the synthetic media stuff even gives you extra room for those who miss an OCI or doesn't quite hit their schedule. I wouldn't feel comfortable with paper filters past 3k miles, those who run them more then 5k miles simply have larger microns rolling around the engine imo.

I myself am curious what a dealer would do if they saw the larger filter on a newer RAM. Could they call it out as the source of an issue? I know we need to add a bit extra oil to counteract the larger filter, but thats just a matter of making sure the dipstick reads correctly.

But could a dealer say that we DIDNT have correct oil level, or we used the wrong size filter and that caused an issue?

I currently have the larger RP filter on my truck, funny thing is a passenger hopped into my truck and saw the correct size RP filter sitting there and asked what car it was for....then freaked out when I said it was for the Hemi.

You got a part number for that Boss filter?

I have the 6.4 running the Mopar paper filter and it is horrible, I get a knock/piston slap 1:40 seconds After start up, that slowly goes away as the engine oil temperature rises.
That tells me the engine is starving for oil. It's crazy a 392 6.4 was designed that way.

Evic on cruze set at 59mph with mds on freeway showed 23.6 mpg's for a 20 mile trip. The only problem with that is I have never got better then 14 mpg's, lol. Now, they can't read my bumper or level, but the evic is way off from the actual gas mileage.

Piston slap the noise will be greater when the the motor is cold. As the piston expands from heat, the noise will lessen or disappear depending on how loose it is.

I found from the research on this forum that the Amsoil, Royal Purple and now the Fram Ultra are Teir 1 quality full synthetic filters. They have the two drain valves that are required in our 6.4 engines. When you inspect and cut open the filters you find that the part quality and machining are superior to many of the others. I changed from the Mopar factory filter to a RP filter 1000 miles. Like others, I noticed that the over night drain down dry start was much better.

I would bet a fram ultra or royal purple filter would fix this. Better anti drain valve.

You mean the pressure relief valve? The ADV doesn't have much use in our vehicles that don't have filters on the side of the engine. Has anyone using either of those filters ever took off a filter that wasn't full of oil? I know I haven't.

Hmmm, filter screws in side ways rather than up and own. My filter "seemed" full, but id not actually pour the oil out to check how much it was holding. Will want to do that next time.

I know you guys mostly use synthetic, but was wondering if any of you use dyno oil. Reason being is I put Castrol GTX 5/20 in about a 1000mi ago and the start up tap is virtually non existent and it seems to be running smoother. I know I will get blasted for putting in Castril but I’m look for dyno oil reviews. Thanks

I do use synthetic, but if i were to use dino oil, I would definately use Castrol. I've mostly used that brand all my years, until the world migrated toward synthetic. Pennzoil Yellow bottle dino is another good choice I believe.

The anti drain back valve is important no matter how the filter is mounted. It stops backwards flow, by gravity, when engine is shut off. the pressure relief valve bypasses filter media if the pressure differiencial is reached or filter media becomes clogged. That way ensuring engine doesnt starve from oil.

No I meant the adv. All I know is that better constructed filters will eliminate dry start ups than say a 2 dollar car quest or other cheap filters.

Whoops, ramnewbie beat !e to it. Better than I could.

I know this ain't got **** to do with oil or oil filters but I just got say that this is the absolute best thread on this entire forum. I could literally go back to the beginning and read this thread over and over again vs. some of the same old hashed/rehashed to death stuff in so many of the other threads.

^^^^Great point. As oil and filter technology (and marketing) continue to evolve, this thread is important to help us and others sort thru our oil choices. Understand what the components and additives do. Understanding the experience of others and how their engines react to the different oils, I find valuable. Can only hope this one lives on.

anti drain back valves do not keep oil in the lines, only in the filter, gravity always empties the lines. It only keeps oil in the filter, which we all have? I've never heard of anyone having a dry filter when changing oil in a ram. I'm not sure if you are saying something different.
