It sounds like you have pretty much talked yourself out of buying a hemi. That's ok, it just leaves more for the people that have never had a problem to buy. Enjoy the 3.6.

Lol! Sorry, but yeah, I kinda did talk myself out of it. Seems way too risky for someone like me who keeps vehicles for 150,000 miles and more.

Honestly, start googling 5.7 hemi lifter cam issues. There's enough of them that it's more than just a stroke of bad luck here and there. Something is wrong.

Come on! They sell 600.000 RAM trucks/year, all are not bad! I'm not blind and know the problems, but how many % of the trucks are "problem" trucks?

You can't walk around in life and just think of the bad stuff...

Exactly. This will probably keep me away from buying a hemi, unless I can get the dealer to give me and extended warranty that will cover that.

You do know GM has ****** lifter problems in there trucks too right ( I think newer V8 is better, not sure) and the 8 speed is crap.

I haven't been on the forums much the past couple years but I don't think the lifter problem is a PROBLEM. This motor is in a lot of trucks and cars.

That's a good point. What is the percentage of bad ones? Does anyone know?

I'm not sure what GM has to do with this?

I am just wondering if the lifter problem has anything to do with the oil being used? Wrong weight? Cheap oil? Not changing until the reminder tells you too? My brother has an 09 5.7 Hemi used as a company truck...idles long periods, stop and go traffic all the time and he almost has 300K on it. After driving his in 2014 it influenced my purchase. He has never had anything but normal wear and tear parts replaced. Ohh.. he did have to replace the Ujoints at 200K and a water pump around the same time. Never had the Hemi tick either. He does use Mobil 1 synthetic every 5K. Makes me wonder if peeps with the lifter problem go 10K on conventional oil?

There's a lot more than these. I mean, how many does it take before you decide to run with the better odds of the V6 rather than the V8?
Not trying to be a pain in the ass here, just trying to do some research and make an informed decision.

That is very possible. I was on another forum where a certified Chrylser mechanic claims he saw a lot of this, but it was mostly on commercial vehicles and police cars, and such, where they spend a lot of time idling. This guy claims that if you don't let your hemi idle for long periods of time, you'll probably never have this problem. I'm not sure of anything anymore. I wish Chrysler would come out and say why there's so many of these, and what the work around might be. Some of these people might be running a different viscosity oil, thinking they're doing some sort of good for their engines. Who knows? I've talked to others who didn't really care, and drove their hemis like they were teenagers trying to destroy their cars, and their hemis just wouldn't quit. They describe them as absolutely bullet proof. If I were to buy one, and later down the road I get surprised with a $ 4000 repair bill on my hands, I'll certainly be kicking myself for knowing this ahead of time, and still buying it.

Apparently, Hemi's are well known ( at least in the Rams) for breaking exhaust manifold bolt over time. I understand it's due to different metal expansion rates, but Chrysler/Fiat is not doing anything about it unless your vehicle is still under warranty. Once warranty is out, you're on your own.

Would this be a reason for someone to stay away from the Hemi's, if buying a slightly used Ram?
I'm shopping a little bit right now, and would love a Hemi, but don't want to have to keep paying for broken bolts, and the labor to remove and replace them.

Anyone know how costly it is to do?
