QSUD might be the best on paper oil going right now.

5w20

5w30 in 2015 loaded with moly

Still valvoline no moly 2018. Hit or miss still.

I just might move the wife's car to qsud.

pennzoil for HM hemi looks good as wel.
Qs changed formula after it looked really good on paper. Not sure what it looks like now but I was able to snag some of the better formula on clearance from advance auto shortly after I bought my RAM (October '17)

Guy at work has a 2007 ram 2500 with the cummins.

His turbo just went out. Dealer wants $4,000 for JUST the turbo!!! Does not include actuator motor because it’s a variable pitch turbo[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23].

Ebay has them for around $2,000 OEM new

$800 Refurbish

$2,500 aftermarket “better” turbo.

Either way..... my god that’s expensive

I’d love to see a QSUD 0w40 on the shelf with 300ppm Moly. And 15.4 cSt at 100C. It’s always nice to have multiple super oils to choose from.

In case anyone not understanding the "super" comment, Hammer means super class oils that are 0w40 but made close to 5w30 cSt upper limit of 12.5. So basically these are 5w30 when the oil shears and it will, the 0w40 has less gov't or api restrictions on additives and thanks to Mercedes and Posrche specs they often contain a high amount of pao or GtL base oils so they can stay in grade better then straight group 3. Of course we see the pao with better cold flow properties, and that is what specifically they are looking for. It is too bad the gov't is all up in the 20 and 30 weights formulas, because if they weren't, you would see all weights being super class oils. Especially with the gf-6 and those challenges with wear and timing chain issues, the gov't still did not waver on thier restrictions on 20 and 30 weights. There is no going back, once the gov't bans a zinc level, they aint changing it, even if it means your engine will be ruined earlier then if it had more protection. So for now anyhow, there are a super class of oils that one can buy that bypasses the gov't regulation and that is a 0w40 that cst is below 13.5, that carries the afformentioned specs. Sometimes the zinc level is also 700ppm, check for that, you may want over 800ppm. Would that be satisfactory clarification?

as zach stated, that qsud was march 2019, so it is good.

Thanks...didnt realize they changed it *again*

With a 180-ish level of moly, Ive always assumed it was plain old moly (not tri-nuclear)

Is that a correct assumption? Since one of the big draws of tri-nuclear is that you dont need so much, I figured no manufacturer would ever spend the extra $$ on putting THAT much tri-nuke in.

Don't hardly know, as you are aware they are never going to tell us. For me personally I wonder about the long term testing, they have stated that TN moly 75ppm = 200ppm moDTC, but that is coefficient of friction only that I see. But, considering it is a molecule with 3 sulfur, how stable is that long term? I would like to see those studies. Seams like high moly oils seam a little quiter, pyb, PUP 0w40, and others seam to be popular. We need some guys running this qsud imo.

New to this forum. 3266 pages, I'm brave but I have my limits, I can't wade through all this! :)

So, my problem, I'm hearing a dry, rasping, ticking noise in my brand new 2019 ram with hemi 5.7. It has done it from the day I purchased it. It does it immeidately upon startup, hot or cold, and is always there (even after hour+ of running). It gets slightly worse under engine load (climbing a long hill). I made a video of it here (please click the little "sound" icon in bottom right corner of video player to turn on the sound). Note how the engine starts, and then about 1.5 seconds after that a new sound appears in the video, that raspy/ticky noise is what I'm referring to.

@Burla, I found you on the "bobistheoilguy" forum discussing this and found your arguments very persuasive. :) I did a search for you specifically on Google after that, bringing me here. A big thanks(!!) to you and the others who are attempting to shed light on this. I don't know if my particular noise is the infamous "hemi tick" or if I have an exhaust leak (brand new truck with < 3000 miles?) or something else, but I'm just trying to fix the tick and make it go away.

So from what I understand; you guys are recommending a test of "red line 5w-30". Couple questions (and please bear with me if this is already mentioned in this very long thread):
1) this oil probably voids my warranty (due to 5w-30 instead of 5w-20), right? Or does it meet the exact standards for this engine?
2) What about the accompanying oil filter, what is the recommendation there?
3) I also live in Canada, we get cold weather at times, 5w-30 is still OK in the middle of winter (-20 deg farenheight)
4) best place to purchase it online? I can't seem to find it in local stores here in Ontario.

For the warranty issue, my idea there is to try running the redline oil for about 4000 miles or so, and if it doesn't fix my sound I'll go back to the dealer oil. If it does fix it, I'll run it and just hope for the best, have to believe that getting rid of a tick is better (or at the very least, "not worse") for an engine than having the tick.

Again apologies if I'm in the wrong thread/spot, I'll gladly do some specific searches if there are details that someone can point me towards.

Yep.

Pennzoil is now made with Natural Gas. It's probably the "cleanest" oil you can buy.

Welp, the raw ingredients of esters are so pure there are like zero contaminations in there. And, all group 3 come from gas as in the process takes feed stocks and puts them in a gaseous state and removes the desired molecules. But, I'm not arguing Pennzoil is a very clean oil, but so are the others. I'm not 100 on the exact procedure, but I do believe they even hydrocrack the GtL because that is needed to seperate the base oil. Pennzoil might be cleaner because it's in a gaseous state twice pulling out impurities, when the other group 3's are gaseous only once. But yes bottom line, Pennzoil of today is totally different then grandpa's pennzoil, and when Shell bought them they have been even more stellar. That's why it is the number one oil used by Ram Forum despite **** poor placement.

It's definitely **** poor compared to Redline. As stated before it might help your tick a little but it didn't do **** for me in the long run. Would be interested to see if its any better than any other brands of GRP 3 oils long term in the war on cam/lifter failures. Honestly I think not.

This is an interesting video on engine noises, it’s a ford 5.4 with a completely different engine design but it makes me wonder if we are experiencing some of the issues he points out?

You suck sir..... you suck....

some guys experience with qsud in hemi thread on bobs, now I know it isn't a hemi, but at least one example of qsud known as a quieting oil and the moly suggests there is good cause to expect smmothness?? One thing to keep in mind, I'm exploring options for guys on a budget, we all know the king of quiet, but let's find all kinds of options for all kinds of strategies? Not only does qsud look like a contender on paper, but guys report it is quiet, and the oil is even cheaper then m1 costco deal. I am sorry I haven't looked at this formula harder recently, we should give credit where it is due. I can't say qsud = top 5, but I can say I hope we get some hemi guys running it to see, maybe some of those who run it can say.

"QSUD is a ladder-rung below Edge, Mobil-1, Valvoline Advanced and Penn Platinum. Even SOPUS reps have acknowledged that, when compared to Platinum" ... I bit on the $17 per 5 qrt. jug of QSUD 5W30 recently after using all of the tier one oils - the Elantra I put QSUD in has never run so smooth and quiet (perhaps Hyundai's Quaker State recommendation is accurate ?) ... I don't plan on running it past 5K mile OCI's with the QSUD but it is after all a D1 / Gen 2 synthetic , so up to 5K OCI's should be good !

Got my biotech today, man 15 ounces looks like a rather large additive. Not used to putting something like that in sump except oil.

Guys, qsud plus biotech, I'm thinking that combo will kick some ass.

Welcome to the forum! Redline 5W30 does not meet the FCA requirements. The recommended filter is the Royal Purple (not sure of model number since you have a 2019). I run the Wix XP filter. I use Redline 5W30 in winter up here in Timmins, no issues. I purchase mine at Partsource. Check them out, they should have it. You could also go to the Redline website and search for stores. Just checked the website and it says the 3 Partsource stores in Hamilton sells it. You might also want to look at the Quaker State Ultimate Durability oil as mentioned above.
