Are the 2016/2017 and newer have cam issues?

I was talking to a shop technician in Alberta who tells me the FCA has resolved the issues with the hemi motor burning through lifter and cam wear on motors that are 2016 and newer. I cant seem to find any thing conclusive either from FCA or their dealers. The 2016 are simply too new to have these issues at the moment. Can anyone confirm?

I wouldn't ever believe anyone on that one, not even the Pope. Plenty of 2016's have hemi tick, which isn't a wiped out cam, but is a sign they are still the same crap as all the 4 gens.

only maybe if you get an FCA engineer drunk enough so that he lets the truth out. Hey, while were at it, lets get the Pope drunk too.

I think you are giving them too much credit, assuming they actually know the truth.

That's very disappointing. This means all the 5th gen hemi motors will have this problem too.

2018 hemi 22k miles no tick motor is silent.

When I first bought mine I put 87 the first time and 89 the second time- cold stat up the truck sounded horrible!!! tick and clanging! So I thought that cannot b good for the motor so I went to 93 on 3rd fill up and by my SECOND start up it was gone and over 3 days the truck got quieter and quieter and overall ran better. The hemi is a high performance motor that has been instrumented to run on 87/89 when you start it up it’s not instrumented and mechanically reliant on octane (that’s not there on 87/89) so it knocks over time this knock start up creates the tick.

Don't want to go there but octane is for higher compression/detonation/advanced timing.
If you have ticking or knocking at idle has nothing to do with fuel.

I tend to agree with this.

There was some study or paper or something that says there *might* be something to higher octane/better quality fuel "cushioning" valves better than lower octane/lesser quality fuel, but Im not sure that would result in what we call "Hemi tick".

Cannot find anything on valve cushioning, the old leaded gas lubricated valves & increased octane level.
Modern unleaded top tier gas has the same detergents/additives in all grades only difference is octane which is increased by adding aromatics(benzene, tolune, & xylene) and highly branched alkanes (methane & ethane).

Do whatever u want- mine was real life not a study

I dont question that aspect of it, although Im thinking the ECU in the RAM cannot take full advantage of 93 (hence why custom tunes are used for 91 and higher octane)

I do think the truck runs better on 89, though. Also gets slightly better mpg. The question an owner needs to ask is if the slightly better running and slightly better mpg are worth the price difference (currently 40 cents/gallon difference between Costco 87 and 93 here...Costco is the cheapest but does not sell 89 so its all 87, all 93 or spend some time mixing to save some bucks)

As long as you are happy & truck runs good that's the ideal thing.
But still think noise problem was a coincidence when going to 93.
Don't get me wrong.....I run 93 all the time but am tuned for it with advanced timing.

I also run 93 all the time with Lucas every time I get gas. Is advanced timing what I need to do??
