I just bought a brand new 2018 Ram 1500 in February with 19 miles.

It came with 6 oil changes up until I reach 30k miles.

When they do these oil changes will they just use standard oil or can you ask them to use full synthetic?

Ask them.
I lucked out. My dealer (one of the managers is a MOPAR-Head and follows the forums) shifted to Penzoil Ultra Premium (PUP) about four years ago.
That makes them the most reliable oil change for a Hemi that I can find (other than DIY with Redline).
All the other shops use Moble 1 or Shell for their synthetic and charge WAY too much.

You might have to pay a little more, depends on what they wrote down.

All dealerships are required to use PUP 5w20 in the 1500’s and 0w40 in the 2500/3500’s the Cummins always use 15w40. This is per FCA

I totally agree!
And for $85 can’t beat that especially for the added insurance that it’s on them if any problems come up.

Yup, oil changes are logged, so any claims, well, its on them.
Plus if I sell truck outright, I can get print off of all oil changes and services.

From my experience and understanding the dealers can use any oil (or any fluid for the specific application) that has the required certification for that vehicle.

PUP is not required

But some dealers use fluids that are NOT certified.

I think most dealers are using a blend as everything I've read says that and my dealer says its what FCA recommends but full syn. is better in virtually the entire industries opinion.

The only people that would go to a dealer for an oil change, that really care what brand or type of oil that is going into our trucks is pretty much us. I bet virtually no one asks the service adviser what oil they're using and on top of that, the service adviser doesn't have a clue either and is going to make something up.

A dealer is not going to knowingly put an off-spec oil in your truck, but they are using bulk, no-name jobber oil in every situation unless you pay more for bottled oil. Which again.. do you trust that they are actually using that?

I bring my own oil to the dealer “PUP 5w20 “. They supply the mopar filter . Oil cost me half the dealer charge for their full synthetic which I believe if you ask for full synthetic it is pennzoil platinum not Pup . I make them annotate what oil I bring in on my receipt ,not just say customer supplied oil on receipt .

I didn't ask what brand just if it was full syn but it should be high quality and he said it was 5-20. I've got till Aug. to use the 2nd free change so I'll be around 5k for that change and when I start with full syn I might push the oil changes to or close to 10k. As for trusting the dealer you never know which is why I normally do my own but for the warranty I know they want the truck to update computers and read codes. They did a flash and it caused my Sirius radio to shut down for a couple days before coming back online.

My dealer uses Pennzoil Ultimate full synthetic, not sure if that's what ya'll are calling PUP or not.

They have a decent deal on oil changes w/ tire rotations if you buy them in advance. I got 6 services for $390.

I asked my dealership's service dept what was going into my truck. It took them a while to answer.

5W20 Pennzoil blend is what they've been using. For $30, I get an oil change, all fluids topped off, they look at the brake pads, and rotate the tires. They'll pick the truck up where I work (5 miles away) and bring it back. I just call them, and give them my debit card number, and done.

The truck has about 46,000 miles on it. Hopefully I don't have to do a cam etc for a long time.

My question is how many miles on a 5,7 Hemi is recommended before switching to synthetic oil.

^^^One thing to understand!
Many brands of autos come off the line with synthetic already in the new motor- never had been a big deal.

But to be politically correct & please the masses - I'm going to recommend 5-10K miles.

Then switch over to synthetic @ any time.
You can go back & forth from conventional to synthetic as many times as you like with No Issues.

The truth is the motor doesn't have feelings so it really won't care.

But I honestly think a semi synthetic or synthetic oil is a more logical option.
Especially if you work the motor harder then just a simple daily driver!

Just my simple minded one sided opinion.
Which will not bring up (Different) brand & viscosity choices.

is it me or do most people go to the dealership for oil changes? This 3rd time I've done a oli change in my 2018 Dodge ram 1500. Who was lead engineer that put oil filter location in the ******** spot? i want to email dodge and tell them who was doing drugs that day! my 2007 Dodge truck had the Hemi also the oil filter was in much better location to get at. The same engine basically just 11 years difference. Why make it more difficult for the guys working on the trucks at the dealership or worse the home mechanic who doesn't trust the dealer!! I would love to email Dodge tell them to screw themselves!!! The other thing is no dipstick for the transmission. These engineers need to get their heads out of their ass. Does it void warranty to put a oil filter relocation on the truck?

My truck was shipped with semi-synthetic. I switched to full synthetic first change.

I change when the digital oil computer level is 3/4's of the way down. Approx. 7500 miles.

I was gonna say, as long as it’s MS6395, api certified and 5w20, they could care less what you use.

you need to rephrase that because the weight of the oil to use isnt determined by the model of truck but by the engine size. pretty sure a 2500 with a 5.7 will not be using 0w40
