Hello all. New to the forum, first post.

I currently own a 2012 Wrangler JKU but I'm looking at getting myself into a Rebel. I've been searching used, 2017 and up, but would like any recommendations on options, pros, cons, price, etc. Is buying used ok or go new?

Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

I love my 2017 Rebel (traded a '12 JKUR). I bought it new (factory order) so I got exactly what I wanted. In my case, the 3.92 rear was a must, as were the RamBoxes. There was a delete option for the red interior trim which I took. Buying used should be fine, obviously keep in mind all the usual gotchas like high mileage and such. If you're in a position to buy new, ordering is usually the best way to go except that the lead time might be crazy long right now based on factory output. Good luck with your search!

Do you miss your Rubi? I bought mine new also, have a Sport S model. Lifted, 35s, 4.56s, new driveshaft, etc.

I wanted to keep it under 30k miles if I can. 35-38k miles max. Most used I see have the red trim interior, which I do like, but majority of the exterior color is White. A few black trucks, and rarely see any other color like gray or red.

What's a good price range for a used Rebel?

I do miss it, but I love the truck. There may be a used JK or JL in my future... Lol

Not sure about the price range, you could check KBB or TrueCar for a reference point.

Love my ‘17 rebel. Mines granite without the two tone black and like rule18, I looked til I found one with the all black interior. The red was way too much for me. I found mine locally as a local lease that was traded in early for a new body style with super low miles. Well taken care of and I couldn’t be any happier with it!

I, too, traded in my ‘12 JKUR, but for my ‘16 Power Wagon. While the family and I dearly miss the Jeep, the truck is just so much more of a vehicle...at least for our use. We, too, are considering getting another Jeep, though. Have missed it ever since!

As far as the Rebel and new or used, I guess it mainly depends on your circumstances. Nothing wrong with buying used as long as its in the right price range. New is great if you can afford it, but you will most likely be stuck with what is available on the lots for a WHILE. A good thing about the newer ones is they are a lot easier to find without that red interior (if that even matters to you).

As much as I would love to keep the Jeep, I feel my current situation with the family is better suited for a truck. More interior room, more cargo, storage, etc.

As my kids continue to get older, they need the room. Even a 4 door Jeep is limited on room. So jumping up to a truck is the way to go

As I look, just was curious on what years to stay away from and what years to target.

I too bought my ‘17 Rebel used, very happy with my Blue/Black-interior combo. Love this truck!!

One thing that I learned a few weeks ago, the third gen (like the “classic Warlock look trucks” were a fully loaded, mostly optioned truck more often than not.

For the 4th gen Rebels, RAM decided to compete more with the Trailboss market it seems, most have cloth interiors and lower option packages (double cab, smaller radio screen, less features, etc) to appeal to the mass market more than the 3rd gen.

Found that pretty interesting, the 4th gen Rebels that I test drove and looked at, were not the same caliber as the loded 3rd gen trucks, hence why I love my ‘17!!

Your '17 is a 4th Gen RAM (2009-2018, and 2019-2020 Classics).

ah whoops.

Thats what I meant! :)

In my post, replace the ‘17 stuff with 4th gen and the new stuff with 5th gen.

Thanks for the correction, rule18, I knew that but I transposed it wrong.

LOL, all good. It was pretty straight forward 'til they started branding the Classics which are past the typical generation time span..

So you get more bang for your buck with the 4th gen Rebels than you do with the 5th gen?

No. He is simply saying the earlier rebels were more apt to be loaded ones, where you can now get them pretty basic for the most part.

Ok thank you.

This is all new to me. I owned a sedan for 10 years before trading it in for my Jeep and now my Jeep for 8 years old so this would be my first truck.

Gotchya. Well with that said, if you are the type of person to desire a base model vehicle, then it could be tricky finding an older used one. You can find fairly plainjane basic ones new, however.

I purchased a used, 2yo rebel for $10k less than it would cost to buy the same truck new..had 27k miles. I researched pricing for new and used quite a while and found that generally the first 2-3 years is when the value takes the biggest loss for ram 1/2 ton gassers. My rebel has been an amazing truck. Hope you find yours.

Something to look out for is the 33-gallon gas tank which should be standard equipment but is not. I would not buy a new or used Rebel without the larger tank. Cannot replace the factory tank with a larger aftermarket one except with the diesel engines and bolting a bunch of jerry cans to the truck is something to avoid.

I was worried bout going to the smaller tank in my Rebel. Hasn’t bothered me though. I pass about 15-20 gas stations each way to and from work. Full tank gets me almost 400miles. Works for me.

Also I know when I was looking at my Rebel there were some guys on other forums that had issues with 32 gallon tanks. They claimed to have the 32 gallon tank...yet their gauge would read and go down as if I have the 26 gallon tank. When they would get to empty, they would still have 6-7 gallons in it.

There was supposed to be a software fix but not sure when that came out.

Just something to look at and ensure is resolved if it matters to you.

My Rebel has the 33 gallon tank. I had the issue where it was still showing 26 gallons on the gauge when I first bought it in 2017. They did a software fix. It came out awhile back.

Still reads a little wonky at times overall. But....it's more accurate. I can be down to nothing on the gauge (only happened a few times) and the most I've put in is about 29 gallons.

I drive my Rebel all over the nation....been to Key West, So Cal...and make frequent trips to Tennessee/Alabama. The 33 gallon tank was a necessity for me and it's worked out.

Where the 32 gallon tank really shines is if you are towing. Just something to think of if towing anything any distance is in your future.

It's expensive to go to the 32 gallon tank after unless you can find a good used one.
Scratch that - used 32 gallon tanks are now as low as $85 and available on car-part dot com
