Good thing he was charging it early in the morning,as later in the day they were telling everybody to avoid plugging their EV's in as the power grid was being stressed handling the cold power usage.Alberta set a power use record yesterday

EV's are not worth it at all. Even Hertz rentals are getting rid of many of them...too expensive to repair. I guess owning an EV is more of a status symbol to make people THINK you're concerned about saving the world.

Numbers don't lie. Funny how the bean counters always have the final say.
even funnier how most people soon realized that EV's were not the answer.

There is a huge EV battery reclamation plant being built in Rochester, NY. Apparently, it's now on "hold" even tho millions have been spent in construction so far.

If EVs are mandated, then rationing of electricity will be common and when the electric company installs a smart meter to your house, then you'll be limited to how much energy you can consume during peak hours.

For example, you want to do laundry after getting home, forget it, you'll have to do that in the morning or late at night and if you do that laundry during peak hours, then of course you'll pay $ for going over your allotment since peak power will cost more per kilowatt and you also may have to pay a higher tax rate for using peak power, or some type of usage tax.

Of course, if you are rich, this won't be a problem, unless rationing becomes such a problem that the electric company has to reduce your power to a trickle after you've used your daily allowance.

Before going all-in with EV we need serious discussion on allowing for nuclear energy, massively upgrading the grid and what limitations will be put on home consumption of energy, including charging vehicles and what those costs will be, ie new taxes on the energy you use and when you use it.

Another good article.

Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold: 'A bunch of dead robots out here'

Many Chicago-area Tesla owners were visibly frustrated on Monday after their electric vehicles failed to charge amid freezing temperatures.
It is an interesting state of affairs, but got to say it is a little bit a matter of clickbait. Another story on this issue found that everyone involved that responded didn't know to precondition the batteries. Without doing that, the cold batteries can't take a fast charge.

Seems like people still won't read manuals. Oh, wait, they put them on the 48 inch entertainment unit in the dash. Oh wait, battery is dead and they can't read about how to charge the battery. :)

Drove past a Tesla abandoned on the side of the freeway the other day, it had warmed up to 5°F, a few miles up the freeway a Tesla in the slow lane of the freeway probably going 30 mph. Road conditions didn't warrant that slow of travel, I was going 70.

You don't see very many EV's on the roads up here when the temp is -30+,and at -50C/-58F in Edmonton i have 2 buddies looking for them, and neither one has seen an EV driving on the roads since last week, lol
I'd hazard a guess by the time it's warmed the interior up enough you can sit in it,it's due for a recharge, lol

I saw a collection of those old electric cars at a couple different automobile museums over the years. One thing that stuck with me was they were supposedly popular among doctors of the day. This being when doctors came to you instead of you going to the doctor, the electric cars were considered more reliable and they didn't have to be hand cranked to start like the combustion engines of the day.

What got me was how many of them had the driver sitting sideways vs facing the front. The cabin was like a parlor room where everyone sat on the perimeter and faced each other instead of the 'stadium seating' we get now. I guess at 20mph and with little traffic, it wasn't a big deal, but can you imagine sitting sideways and steering with a tiller on today's roads? o_O

You can see the seating in this photo. Petersen Automotive Museum in LA. If you've never been and you find yourself in LA, it's well worth the visit. So many cool cars from different eras, movie props, etc.

I was just reading through a survey of Cybertruck order holders. About 25% of them (this just on those who responded, so take results with a grain of salt) are opting for the $16,000 500 pound range extender battery that eliminates 1/3 of the bed volume and has to be professionally installed. All to get 120 miles of range.

So, hoping my math is correct if the average driver goes 12k miles a year the extra range would be approximately 3100 miles, so in a 10 year life this would equal about $.50 a mile.

Tell me again how your EV is cheaper to run than my 2500?
