LSD installed. If you don't have it you're crazy.

Hopefully a few guys still doing their shopping see this, and the value that $75 on the dealer option list provides. IMO you're nuts to not get it for that price.

2g guy here....LSDs are amazing. Once you own a truck with one you'll never want an open.

I got enough traction to not get weird going around corners when wet, but it'll still slide when I wanna get stupid. An LSD offers you a great deal of control over an open, imo.

bump...can anyone give me a thread or two on an LSD comparison between the Mopar, Auburn, and Detroit TruTrac kits? I see Moe's has them all but don't understand pro's/con's of each. My local Ram dealer is working up a labor estimate for me. If I wanted to to the gears at the same time, approx. how much would additional labor costs be for front and rear gears if I'm already doing the rear LSD?

I can't give you any threads, but an auburn or trutrac will probably me more aggressive than oem. The downside is that those may need further modification to work. While the OEM just pops in. Don't quote me, but that's what i have kinda been seeing.

On another note I dropped my 14 Ram 1500 off at the dealer this morning for the Mopar LSD install. One good thing by going with the Mopar LSD versus aftermarket is at least in my case the dealer is updating my Vin to include the LSD as a dealer installed option so now that will be covered under my power train Warranty too.

The OEM or ZF Auburn units are the only 2 that are a direct swap on the 2011-up Ram trucks. The Auburn unit we have on the site and the Detroit Trutrac will only work on the trucks up to 2010. In order to run these on a 2011 or newer, you would also need a new axle shaft, new gears, and a new install kit with the older 9.25axle ring gear bolts.

In the end, its usually much easier and cheaper to go with the OEM unit.

Thanks. I read somewhere that the OEM part could wear out over time. Has that actually happened under normal conditions to anyone? Thats why i was looking at potentially an aftermarket company also.

The OEM unit has clutches just like the aftermarket Auburn LSD. The trutrac is gear driven, so it does not have clutches that will wear out over time. The Trutrac is a better unit, but it all comes down to how much you want to spend to get it in there as apposed to the bolt in OEM LSD. In order to run a Trutrac in your truck, you would need a complete axle from an 09-10 as well as new gears, install kit, and ring gear bolts...or you can keep your current axle, and just replace 1 of the axle shafts, and get the aftermarket gears, install kit, and ring gear bolts.

The OEM ZF unit bolts right in to your current housing, and will only require the LSD and install kit.

Thank you! Does it make sense to consider doing a gear swap at the same time? I have the 3.21's but was thinking of moving up to the 3.92s. what is involved with the gear swap? I think I read somewhere the front axle is much more involved?

I've heard and seen 3.21 gears on 8-speed Rams and you probably wouldn't need to re-gear, my buddy has a new 8-speed with 3.21's and a tune and he spins his tires easily. As others have said though, don't fear the gears. If you're going to rip into it anyway you may as well upgrade your gears. Hell, you have to take it off when putting on the LSD anyway. If you have a 4WD then you may as well stop thinking of re-gearing because it will be **** tons of money. The front axle on the newer Rams are way more involved. You have to pretty much change everything to change it. The gear is welded to the differential. Just the labor, new gears, and rear LSD alone will probably be like $2000. Then you'll need new serious parts like axles, transfer case, etc(don't know what exactly you'll need for that). Now, post some pictures of that Evora!

Yeh I have 4x4 so I guess that'd be out, at least for now.

These trucks should come with LSD diff STANDARD. It should be an option to delete LSD for the rare individual that wanted an open diff.

Agree completely. But I highly doubt such an individual even exists.... those that end up with an open diff probably don't even know what it is or how it works. Boggles my mind how you can make a $30-50k purchase without knowing things like which diff or rear gear you want or why you want it.

With yours being a 4x4 I wouldn't do gears. It'll be real expensive. The lsd doesn't take long to install if you know what you're doing.

Just to give a update on my Ram.
Dropped off my truck Thursday morning for the LSD install.
I picked it up Friday morning.
total bill from dealer was $1411.12
I figure that isn't too bad considering that now it is all added to my vin and is covered under my power train Warranty.
The truck is now totally different, it actually hooks up after about 15 feet or so as before with the open rear diff it would spin through 1st and part of 2nd gear. Much happier now.
