How accurate is the manufacturers claim of the 10000 point towing capacity on a quad 4x4 with 3.92 hemi 5.7. I have a 2014 8 speed. I am looking at toy haulers that weigh around 7000 pounds. I will probably have 2 motorcycles in there plus little things. I know it's close. I wouldn't be pulling it often. I should be OK right? I just don't want to over work the truck. I have heard that manufacturers tend to exaggerate capacities. I plan on getting a boat soon also. I didn't want to spend the extra on a diesel or 2500 since I use it mostly for commuting.

How much stuff will you load up in the truck? I'm shopping for a tow vehicle myself, been doing a lot of research as I'm trying to avoid the larger 2500's. The problem I run into with my TT is the hitch weight. The hitch weight gets transferred to the vehicles payload capacity. And some models have low payload. Which sucks if you want all the bells and whistles!

I was almost ready to buy one a few weeks ago until I noticed the door sticker said 1100lbs payload, which with a 850lb tongue weight, would mean I'd run out of payload before I ran out of towing capability.

Which is generally the case overall when not going for a larger truck.

Being that close to the limit, I wouldn't put any weight in the bed except maybe clothes, blankets, etc.

Wish me luck.... I'm about to test this. One way trip, 900 miles - 10,000 lbs. I have installed airbags as well.

BoldAdventure is correct. Available payload is what you need to be concerned about.

your truck will have no problem pulling 10,000 lbs. hell, it will pull more then that with out much hiccup either. how it handles the load is a totally different story. most dealers let you test out trailers before you buy them. hook it up and see what its like on the highway behind your truck. i would be more concerned with how comfortable towing it would be versus overworking the truck.

Towing is weird though...

I've towed my TT (6,900# dry weight - closer to 8K down the road) on 3 different outings.

Last 2 were with a new set of E rated tires.

I'm getting more comfortable with the way it tows.

What I'm trying to say is that at first it may feel like you don't have enough truck or too much weight, etc, but until you tow with it a couple of times it's gonna feel weird.

Also, just setting up the camper for a couple of days then hooking up and taking off, it all starts all over. Takes a few miles for me to relax.

You need actual weights - go to a pilot station - full your truck up with gas and split the axles on the scale - get out and get your weight - this is your curb weight - subtract that from the GVWR and you have an actual payload capacity - there are lots of trailers available that have low hitch weights - with the proper WD hitch set up you can maintain the hitch weight through proper loading.
