The big issue is with the heavy pin weight. We had a 39' goose neck we hauled for the race cars with my dads f-250 and in the front it had 15k watt diesel generator air controls and a 60 gallon fuel tank all right in front. My dad tosses Firestone bags on it and the truck sat level but the tires flexed something feairce it's a good thing we never had to haul It very far and really needed a dually for it. Most fifth wheels are +2000 on the hitch plus if you tow cross country could you image a blow out on a SRW with a 2-3000lb pin weight... A 3500 is were it should stop in my mind. If you have to buy a commercial vehicle for recriational use it might be a little much... But who am I to judge..

I saw a guy last summer with a 1500, 5th Wheel and a boat (trained, legal in AB with proper equipped tow veh.) heading into the Roger's Pass (Alberta/BC Hwy 1 - Canada). It was scary to know he was even on the same road as me. About 1/2 hr later we saw him pulled over by the RCMP having a chat, never saw him again after that...

I have driven those roads many times. Usually it's not the road that will get you- it's the tourists driving like animals. He is actually pretty lucky the mounties got to him before Sir Isaac Newton did. Wouldn't have been this guy would it? Saw him in our local Safeway parking lot last year.

Lol, the same level of retardedness, but no.. he had a 5th on his 1/2T.

I didn't think you were permitted to train in SK... and even if you are, I'm almost certain no place permits 2 ball hitches...

I think Idaho does, one of those West coast States.

Yeah SK allows trains (total length limit 75') and you can have two ball hitches as long as the lead is tandem axle with brakes. We're a little backwoods out here. Basically if you can get wheels on it, you can tow it.

Yes it is legal here and I will be trying it out this summer with this truck. Supposed to be under 65 feet total length with the bumper pull and up to 75 with 5th wheel towing I believe. I have done it before with my previous truck (an f250 diesel that was much heavier than this truck) and it wasn't bad. I will have my truck, my camper which is 30 feet (5700 pounds dry, don't tow with water in it) and a small trailer with a four wheeler and 2 dirt bikes on it. Should be around 8000 pounds total. I usually camp less than 2 hours away and speeds are 60 or under on mountain 2 lane roads. I will take pictures.

these are supposedly 1/2 ton towable but the pin weight on the smallest is my payload. I was looking for the Passport 5th wheels they are light but they must not make those anymore

Yeah- even at a modest 8000lbs- and that is VERY lightly loaded as far as I am concerned- plus a couple hundred in the bed for the hitch, you can see where that's going really quick. The smaller one has a GVWR of over 10k. I have seen a lot of these Cougar 5ers on other forums, they all seem to sit right at 8500-9000lbs when camping as reported by those users. Not the same models I am certain, but I think it's a pretty close comparison.

The one I was mentioning in Cypress looks (based on the position and size of the slides) almost identical to the 279RKSWE which is 30'. The dry pin weight is 20% as shipped- and that usually stays pretty close when loaded. So, for a guess- I would have bet that thing to be 9000 loaded and have a pin weight of 1800lbs plus hitch, 5 people, etc... spooky.

I pull a 5th wheel all the time with my 2012 Ram 1500 Express, regular cab, short bed, 4x2. Its got the 5.7 Hemi & 3.92 rear gear. I added Airlift 1000 air bags. That's it! Truck does a great job. I would never go back to pulling a large travel trailer. The 5th wheel pulls so much better.
Our rv is a Cougar X-Lite 26SAB. It weighs 7100 pounds. Pin weight is 1190.
We have pulled for several thousand miles so far without issue. Good Lord willing, we will travel many more. Hope this has helped...

well I'll admit and I've said it before on here I didn't do the proper research. I would've tried to find a 2500 with the 5.7 now. If I could afford it... most here have diesels.

For a tow vehicle, you've done one train of thought and that's "make the tow vehicle take up as little as possible of the max GCVW".. I don't know if much has changed but using 2015 numbers, Max payload is 1603lbs, so you are leaving room for ~400lb of passengers... I think the only issue I see with that setup would be strong winds.. your truck likely doesn't weigh much more than 4500lb, if that. But that's a confidence/know your limits issue. Not a bad way to go if you don't need much truck.
