What is the purpose of the thermostat change? Just to run cooler? Or is there a performance difference?

With custom tunes, you're engine will be performing stronger and working harder, which could produce more heat and wear to your engine. By changing the tstat to a lower number, it will help reduce the heat and keep your engine performing strong. Everyone I have talked to mentioned that a 180 tstat is recommended with the Hemifever custom tunes.

Let's just say that short term the engine will run cooler which will allow for less possible knocking or pinging due to detonation. This is due to lower temps. And it will prevent heat soak in the engine compartment which in turn equates to more power.
In the long term the engine will be less likely to cook engine components such as seals, gaskets, oil etc. This will minimize deposits and maximize the longevity of the engine due to lower temps. Granted low temps are just as bad as high temps but, having a high performance engine run at temp of 215 average is a bit extreme

So it's a good idea even on the 5.7? I had one on my 5.2 and it did help reduce pinging, but those old Durangos sure were tough to heat up on cold winter days even without a low temp t-stat. It took 30 minutes to start to feel comfortable in that thing on cold days, ha. That t-stat held it right at 180 unless it was balls hot outside, when the temp would inch up to 185, 190. I'd be glad to put one on my 5.7's if it will help, but I haven't had any pinging issues with my 13 or the 07. Does it actually help with the heat soak? I never noticed any performance increase with it in the 5.2.

Back in the day it was said to fool your system in to dumping a little more fuel into your engine, so by increasing air flow with a CAI you cheapest way to get a little more out of your engine was to add the 180 t stat.
Don't know if that is fact or not, but that and hearing Hemi's operate better at cooler temps was enough for me to go with this mod.

Yeah, wasn't saying you going to be gaining 15hp and you will fit it. Maybe a couple if that..

Surprisingly with the 180 stat, the hemi warms pretty quick. Even on really cold days I would let it warm up a little bit anyways before I got in.

a cooler engine will maintain timing better as well, if you have a HF tune and he is tweaking timing it will give him a more stable tune rather than having to make the range wider to compensate for a swing in timing - it will be a bit more predictable. a few degrees goes a long was depending on how he tunes..
