So
I hear the same thing on mine 2013

Edit, just noticed I'm now a senior member haha
So should we try to diagnose this further? Or we'll just agree that this is normal because few trucks have it?

Easy to prove its not TC/flex plate, cover bolts & 3 bolts from flex plate to converter.

I haven't given it much thought, I'm honestly not too worried about it.

I've been meaning to check this on mine but I'm a bit concerned about removing the structural dust cover without a way to support the transmission.

I'm not convinced this is anything bottom end. Rod knocks are unmistakably loud and usually get worse when the oil thins out, wrist pins could get better or worse with heat but wrist pins are usually more of metallic knocking or ticking. I'm still convinced this is a form of benign piston slap. The Hemi pistons are extremely short skirted.

Here's a video of a GM 5.3 piston slap and to me it sounds similar.

my 2014 has the same noise on startup, especially now in the colder months. Gets louder once you put it in gear, goes away quickly when it heats up. It's gone after a 1/4 mi of driving.
I did some reading / watching videos online cause I had the same concerns of something going really bad but also came to the conclusion it's piston slap.
Most other noises would not go away with the temp going up (bearings, driveline components) or would get worse over time.

I run 5w30 Amsoil SS but oil will not be able to cure the slap as it can the tick. I just try to make sure not to put too much load on it while it makes the slapping noise, so I basically just idle out of my street right now with low ambient temps. Just sounds kind of embarassing like some clapped out whooptie...

Well that ducks if it is piston slap. Lifters and a cam would be doable, but negative ghostrider for pistons lol. That being g said, I had a 5.3 gmc with piston slap that still ran fine at 300k before I sold it...but ya kind of embarrassing like I want to put a block heater lmao jk..sort of

going by some of the current threads, we may still get a chance to do the lifters and cam anyways haha.

That is so minor IMO I wouldn't even worry an ounce, nothing compared to my hemi tick Pre-Redline oil.

I agree, my hot idle tick I had on PP 5w20 was much louder and worse sounding than that noise.

That's exactly how mine sounds. I'll try to get a video this afternoon when I get home from work, it's about 20 here so it should be cold enough to make some noise...

Keep in mine piston slap isn't the death warrant it used to be in older engines. I've done several oil analysis and none have come back with high aluminum or iron which is what would be high if it we're causing any accelerated wear.

At least it aint ticking, doesn't sound bad to me.
Yeah t's whisper quiet as far as ticking goes, thank you Redline! I'm really not too concerned with this noise because it goes away when warmed up.

I do like the specs on the racing blend of royal purple, going to try it 5-30 vs regular blend which has no molly

You mean the hps? That's the only RP I would consider using...
