Greetings! I have a 2009 Ram 1500 4wd with 85k miles on it. I've kept full synthetic in it with regular oil changes. I happened to notice a very very faint lower knock (barely can hear it if at all in park) When you put it in Reverse or Drive, it pretty much sounds like a new duramax diesel. I am being told it is a thrust bearing issue and if I don't address it soon i'll be looking at a crank...so couple of questions:

Does this sound correct?
Is this a full engine pull?

Thanks!

That does sound like a possibility, I believe it is possible to get that w/o removing engine or dropping transmission in the older Rams, I believe it shouldn't be that different for the 4 gen but can't say 100%.

what brand oil do you run?

a used oil analysis would be helpful on that, unless you are just going to go for it.

I have ran royal purple 5-20 for the life of it. When the truck warms up (I went for a highway drive today then pulled in the drive to listen) I couldn't hear the knock. Since I have the MDS permanently disabled, would it be better to start running 5-30? I have heard a manifold bolt broken before and this is way different. I'll get a video soon with it in the garage so you can hear it better.

Awe bud, royal purple took their moly out of their formula. Read this moly basics. Check PQIA moly levels in most oils.

There was a point where 6 trucks in a row that had internal problems (cams and lifters) had someone using a non moly's oil. RP where two of them, Valvoline where 2 of them. Now if you call yours an internal problem, it would be the last 8 of 12 that I've read.

I would encourage you to plug into the synthetic oil thread, we have found some oils that help against tick, it is only a theory that would translate in preventing a failure, but it is worth a look and some research. I use 5w30, and most guys on the oil board are using it, but many stick with 5w20. If I was gonna use 5w20, I would really look at the formulas.

But most important, first fix that issue, just do some research going forward.

Are you talking about this noise when it's cold only?

If so, it's a Hemi thing, most likely piston slap. My buddy has a 2016 Laramie that made that same noise when cold with less than 500 miles on the odometer.

Here's a video of mine making the same noise

Start at about 1:35

If it's this noise I'm fairly confident it's nothing to worry about, just quirky thing with Hemi's...

It's definitely not those, it happens when in gear under a load. I'll run out and get a video stand by.

Dammmmnit! I'll check it out. I'll read up and make the switch to 5-30. I have an amsoil account I may go that way.

Ok cool a video would be good. Forgot to mention that it gets louder while under load ie in drive or reverse but goes away when the motor gets warmed up...

Certainly sounds different then hemi tick that we get in most of these sounds. IDK the process of checking if it's the bearing, you might just go ahead and replace it, drop the oil pan and see the access. If you are gonna drop the pan, I mean you mise well just change the bearing anyhow. Redline 5w30 literally silences most of the ticks it comes across to the tune of 80% of them, but I'm not sure it will help a crank bearing. But I might put that oil with a rp filter after you change the bearing, highest moly count of all of the otc oils.

when you drop the pan, take a pic if there is sludge or metal, I bet that will tell a story why the thing failed in the first place.

Wow, disappointed in the purple oil. I just put some in my wife's 6.2L Denali as well : ( I can't get Amsoil locally, but can order online if it is the best for my hemi.

I would research oil before buying a name, that oil is far different then it was 10 years ago, as all oils are. New oils that are API are low additives compared to oils that are more stout. However, Amsoil SS does have decent moly.

What is the oil pressure when its cold vrs operating temperature at idle & 2k rpm?
Emergency brake on have someone listen while making the noise in drive & reverse to see if it is at bottom front or back of engine, at transmission or louder with hood raised.

The oil pressure is a almost dead on 40 at idle and increases with rpm. The loudest place is under the drivers door near the transmission. It isn't as pronounced while in front with the hood open. I will see if I can use the garden hose trick to further narrow it down. It sounds like a duramax pulled up to me lol

It is really confusing regarding recommended oil. I see alot of people post that Mobil1 is not "dodge approved" etc.

Don't think bearings is an issue then, when bearings go, the knock will get louder as oil thins out from heat, you will have less oil pressure also.
Sounds like cracked flex plate, damaged torque convertor or transmission related.

Oil has been changed religiously, radiator flushed when I replaced the water pump, transmission fluid is very light/clear colored. No leaks. I can check if the flex plate is cracked, I really hope its not transmission related at 85k miles :(

I am leaning towards Redline 5-30 and I will post the results either way after I change it. Now to search for filters...lol

Check for lose flex plate to convertor bolts also.
Would not hurt to flush transmission & change filters at 85k.
