Hello everyone .With the recient discussions about the new 44-44 borg warner transfer case operation and the fact its not true locking I thought I do some testing to see for myself how auto operates vs lock . I brought a friend with me with his lifted jeep cherokee in case I got stuck. We chose a construction site with some drifts and hills to climb, I thought this would be a good place to test stuff out. Upon entering the site I switched to 4 lock and left traction control on . Driveing down the makeshift road was a breeze as I would expect at the end of the road was a 15 ft high hill sloped about 30 degrees on either end . We turned off the road and headed for the hill . This truck was a champ plowing thru 15 " of snow drift and climbing the hill. I did get a bit of wheel spin but that was to be expected as I didnt charge the hill with huge force just kept the truck moving at about 3 mph or so and she climbed like a champ, I want rwally expecting this with just stock tires and an open diff but hey ill take it. The traction control worked very well. Next I tried to go slower amd see if I could get her stuck a little so I could see how the tcase operates. I pulled up to the base of hill and stopped and let the truck sink into the drift I got stuck lol. Really stuck actually as I tries to rock the truck out I just kept digging deeper rutts. This was perfect to see what the wheels were doing . In 4 auto the backs needed to spin first before the fronts would spin but in 4 lock the front and rear spun together.i will say that my rears would not spin until I pushed the accellerator so I wasnt exactly on ice but it was nice to see the difference between auto and lock myself. I got my buddy to tug me out of my rutts, I need to disable traction controll to get out so I could get some good wheel spin because my buddy was digging deep rutts himself tryin to pull me out lol. Once I got out we resumed playing and iwas definetly not stopping anymore :). All in all it was better than I expected but definitely not a hard core 4x4 my friends jeep put it to shame but he has a 6" procomp lift and 35" tires he was climbing the steep side of the hill lol. Anyway just thought I d share some observations while I was out having fun cheers everyone

We need a send that man a beer function on here, thanks for clearing that for some of us. There are some decent youtube videos too of 1500s, one withOUT the LSD rear spinning both right wheels and not moving.

You should have tried 4 low. I would be interested to see if it acts the same then.

I totally understand. I get in my most insane predicaments when I don't have a camera, or am too freaked and in a rush to get going that I don't take the time to actually stop, get out and set up a shot.

Thanks for providing the good info. And better yet, good to hear you are having fun with the truck!

But, we do like to see photos... :party52:

Hi Postal two, and All,

This is what the manual says 4 lock is just that, locked, 4 low is the same as 4 lock except at 3 x's the gearing so what wold be 75 mph in 4 lock, is 25 mph in 4 low. At least on the 44-45 Tcase. And if you do have the lsd, when you start spinning you get three wheels driving. I have tried this and it is the two rears and right front. When it does this it pulls so hard it fells like there is something pushing you. I have tried this on snow covered road and on a snow covered hill with the same result.

PostalTwo and/or anyone else with the BW 44-44:

There's one true test to see if your "on demand" T-Case is working as advertised:

-Find dry pavement
-Put T-Case in 4Lock or 4Low
-Begin going straight (slowly 5-6 mph)
-Start turning left or right until you get to your steering lock
-If you feel any binding at all then your T-Case is working [as advertised]
-If you do not feel any binding then your T-Case is not working [as advertised]

*Performing this test will not hurt anything as long as you quit the test when you feel binding and keep the MPH very low (5-6 mph)

Post back with your results. I'm sure many of you will be disappointed that 4Lock is not actually 4Lock

Thanks for ur responses guys I am aware of this and have done the test on dry pavement. On my truck in lock I did bind a little with the wheel to the stops , nothing like my part time case did. There has been lots of talk lately about this . Other member have done tests by putting there truck in snow banks with the rear tires on ice and there rear tires would spin without the fronts turning. I believe this is because there are clutches at the wheel ends that dissconect while driving on dry roads for fuel economy.the point of this test was to see how the truck would act in a real situation. In this case deep snow what I found is that once on the power the system works, quite well actually. The other part of the test was to see how the tracton control worked in this situation, as I have open diff front and rear. Im pleased to report that it worked very well braking wheels that were spinning to give the traction needed.to get up the hill. For me it worked sufficent for my purposes as I didnt buy it for rock crawling and woulnt mod my truck for it either due to the fact I cant get lockers for it and it has a long wheel base.i just wanted to report that the truck is functional and not completely use less. Cheers guys

Just to let you guys know when in 4wd the stability control should be disabled. It will override your transfer case and limited slip(if equipped) by applying brake pressure to whatever corner is going sideways. It is not TRACTION CONTROL! A good test to know what I am talking about, break loose your tires on a turn with a good patch of gravel and you will feel it kick back straight. If you do it going straight only your limited slips kicks in if you have it.

That only comes into play though if you are going sideways, having it disabled did nothing going in a straight line.
