Hey Guys,
Purchased a 2015 1500 Laramie from a friend. it was his dad's (70 years old) daily commuter that was mainly driven on the highway. no towing.

they had the oil changed regularly at a 3700 mile interval at jiffy lube with penzoil conventional.

truck currently has 134,000 miles. runs strong. has a very light tick, sounds like normal lifter noise to me. it is due for it's oil change in 800 miles.

I was considering switching to PUP to help prolong the engine life. when I check the oil, it looks pretty clean. just not sure if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Thanks in advance! been enjoying this forum! lots of great info!

If you're doing that ,throw a bottle of Lubegard in with it.What weight of PUP are you thinking of using. At that milege you might be better off sticking with conventional oil in a 5W-30 and throwing a bottle of Lubegard in with it

You can switch to a full synthetic and increase the oil change interval to 7500 miles, anything less and your sorta draining good oil for no reason.

Was considering PUP 5w20 and a Fram ultra synthetic filter. Sounds like lubeguard would be a good idea too

That should be a good choice especially in Oregon since it gets pretty darn cold in the winter. I used Lubeguard with Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w20. That biotech stuff seems pretty good.

would 0w-30 Redline be a good oil to use year round?

What oil temp and pressure do you have at hot idle?

I would say that you would be good to go with full synthetic and a longer interval.

Is the tick at startup then quieter as it warms up, or quiet at start and more noticeable at temperature?

I checked it the other day and at idle it was around 50 PSI at idle. which surprised me. I had a Tahoe that had like 25 psi at idle when warm :/

I listened to it today at lunch and the tick is pretty quiet and when warm. I'll have to listen to it at cold start next time.

The oil pressure in my '15 SLT with 156k miles is around 40 at hot idle with oil temp around 212° F. Sometimes it will drop into the high 30's, especially if the oil temp has been higher and then cooled to that.

Makes me a bit nervous when I see it drop into the 30's at idle. Sometimes, I will shift to neutral and the psi will increase to ~40 psi.

Reason i asked about the tick is that so many of us here have suffered the broken exhaust manifold bolt issue, which shows as a tick at cold start that subsides after warm-up. Super easy to check for.

FYI Newburg OR doesn't get all that cold in the Winter, now if he was in eastern OR then yes it can get really cold

Sometimes the replacement manifolds also warp and break the new studs. It has been found that milling or belt-sanding the warped exhaust manifolds flat, or installing headers, are the best ways to ensure a lasting fix.

LOL! Agreed! We are lucky to get snow once a year and rarely get below the upper 20’s

Oregon is fairly mild
