So i changed my front and rear diff fluids with redline recently, and I was going through a couple old posts (after I bought and changed the fluids) that mentioned you shouldn't use redline that has "NS" at the end of the label. The rear was fine, no NS, but the front does have it. Is that ok or should I add modifier? I'm starting to get a little bit of a hown chatter noise going and I'm not sure if it's front or rear. The front isn't limited slip so I would think it was1000014806.jpg

It depends what your rear axle is.

Limited Slip axles have clutch discs that need friction modifier additive to prevent sticking and chattering.

Open axles can take anything.

Anti spin torsen all gear axles should not have friction modifier additive because they interfere with speed of antispin lockup. That's what "NS" gear oil is for.

Find out what axle is in your truck. If you have Limited slip clutches, you can buy friction modifier additive for it.

I have limited slip 3.92 rear. That had additive in it already. Sounds like i should add more?

So if you read the additive instructions on redline's additive it reads...

copy and paste..

  • Add 1oz at a time to clutch-type limited slip or posi-traction units to eliminate chatter
Bottom line good to have on hand if you get chatter, if you don't get chatter, do not use it. Why, if you use too much of this you wont get the traction needed. You can get chatter at some point as oil breaks down, in which case you would use one ounce at a time till it goes away.

Ask yourself why only one ounce at a time.. Because it is very important to follow those instructions.

Try driving in 4wd high and don't take turns obviously, and see if you have chatter. You have a long strip like a few miles with no turns? It's not going to hurt dump an ounce in see if anything changes. You could also add it to rear again to see if chatter goes away. Just don't over due it or you will be draining again.

Redline is just a name, FYI sometimes for a host of unkown reasons that could include too many variables, every once in a while on any brand you need to change it again and swap brands. If you start adding the additive and end up using a bottle and still chatter. Maybe time to move brands. In this case if and I say if it comes to that, I would do front diff first and if needed then move to rear. That NS product is for manual gear boxes, even open diffs OEM spec with additive.

Ok that's what I was getting at with the original post. I added ns to the front diff. So I was more worried about that than the rear, I tried 4 high and didn't have any change in noise. I'll start with an ounce like you guys said.

Front diffs are open differentials - need no friction modifier additive

Only the rear differentials have options for limit slip or anti spin

I think your 15 calls for 75W-140 in the rear diff
