Local used car dealer is offering me $33,500 for a lifted 2016 2500 bighorn. The truck looks great on the outside and in. Truck drive great. I looked under the truck and now I’m worried that it’s way over priced. Looks like a lot of rust which is flaking to the touch. It even looks like they spray painted some of the frame. I don’t want to buy it for it to fall about in a year. What are your thoughts?

Looks about average for that year here in the rust belt. I'd be leery of the suspension wear with the lift and the poked out tires. 90K isn't bad at all, but that price is outrageous to me.

To be honest the under carriage doesn't look too extreme for a 7 year old vehicle at 90k in the salt belt. Also pretty common for car dealers to spray some paint or undercoating on the outer part of the frame you can see to clean it up. I'm not saying I like the rust or that you shouldn't be concerned with it, but you should crawl underneath other similar age trucks and compare them. Unless they have been treated, kept really clean, or not driven in the winter they will probably look similar. My last truck (not a Ram) I bought new and didn't do any special rust treatments to but did try to keep clean and hose off the undercarriage. Rust on the undercarriage started causing issues after about 10 years, as in linkages, brake lines, fuel lines, etc...started rusting out and started failing. This was more in central Ohio so not nearly the snow fall and corresponding salt on the roads as more northern Ohio. What I see in the pictures seems to correspond with what I have seen in the past for that age. Also why I spray my current truck down with Woolwax.

I would say RUN as fast as you can from that rust bucket, my 2006 2500 4x4 spent 15 years/99K in north Iowa ( I swear they put a ton of salt per mile during the winter) an it had hardly any rust on the frame, none on oil pan or floor boards.....

For that price to much rust RUN whatever coating they used on that frame caused it to rust like that.

Parked on the grass? Waaaaay to much money, waaaay to many potential problems, especially if the pans rust through. As above, RUN!

OP, I think you answered your own question. That's a lot of rust. Ram bodies rust pretty bad too once it gets hold. That truck is going to be a problem. Yer in Ohio, yer better off looking a bit to the South or in TN and driving down to buy a nice clean truck there. Once you find a nice, clean pickup, use those pictures you posted and have them apply undercoating those rust-prone areas, (and the body too of course), and enjoy a nice-looking pickup for years.
