I have about 1500 miles on my Ram. While driving on the highway, most noticeably over 70, when coming out of a left hand corner I feel resistance in the steering coming back to straight. (Scared the hell out of me the first time) I can also reproduce it while driving straight and yanking the wheel to the left for a second, I can feel the resistance coming back to straight Does not happen going right. Last night I was on the highway for about an hour and could reproduce it every time. Stopped at a rest stop for 15 minutes and the issue went away for the rest of the drive home..about 30 minutes. Had the issue 3 or 4 times prior. Can't make it happen today. Alignment "feels" fine, tire pressure good. Dealer checked a couple TSBs on the steering motor ground and steering shaft plate but no issue found. Does not happen when he test drives it.

Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas?

Had the same problem. Have about 1500 miles and was getting resistance turning the steering wheel to the right. Only happened when I was driving on a left curve. Took it to the dealer. It’s been there going on 5 weeks. They had to order the whole gear box. Don’t really know much about that. But the whole steering column. They got one 2 weeks ago but when shipped it wasn’t packaged correctly and got there damaged. Came on here to see who else has had the same problem.

I had to have my entire steering gear/ rack and pinion replaced after my steering completely went. I just got my truck back yesterday. Below is a brief summary of what happened.

On 5 separate occasions, my power steering completely failed. The first 2 times were all coming to a stoplight, at around 15-5 MPH a "POWER STEERING SERVICE UNAVAILABLE" warning would flash on the instrument cluster and the steering was stiff as all hell. This would only last for a second or two then the steering would return to normal. These all happened about a week apart of each other so it's briefness and intermittency was not too concerning. That is until I was rolling down the highway going 75 MPH and my power steering goes completely out for 15-20 seconds until I could pull off to the shoulder and come to a stop. This is easier said than done because a truck full-size truck with 12.5 wide tires is a bit of a handful to reel in sans power steering.. I gave the wheel a few jerks and it snapped out of its episode, so I went about my day with my hands clenched tight because I thought it was going to go out again at any moment. The following two mornings steering went out twice more just after starting the truck and making it maybe 30 seconds away from my house, both were momentary losses.

I take the truck to the dealer and there are several codes thrown ( voltage codes, and something about implausible data right front hub maybe some others didn't have a chance to write down the full codes, sorry guys I'll get them later though). They take it in and have a look at it and say the power steering gear has been binding up, causing the failure. Here's the kicker, this apparently happened to the shop foreman's truck as well as a couple of other 2019's that my dealer services and they are apparently using a revised part due to these failures (it's a wonder I haven't seen it come up on the forum if it's that much of an issue though).

The codes thrown were "c2129-17" as well as some other voltage codes. Here's the ticket post fix.

do you have the lane assist option? if your on the highway it will make it feel like its fighting you to stay in the lane. on curves it was almost like the power steering was cutting off. turn mine off now when on the curvy parkways and its fine.

Same issue with me. It usually happens once a day on my way home from work during a left curve it gets stiff. It’s to the point I know when to expect it because it happens in the same area every time, it’s the only spot I make this slight left. Never does it on a full left turn, I haven’t taken it in but will soon.

Hmmm. Just experienced the same issue as the OP on an 800 mile trip. I never thought about it being related to my lane assist. Thanks for posting this tip!

Anyone have luck with taking it in to the dealer, I took it in to get a leveling kit and bigger tires, and they said they couldn't find anything

Exact same with me. It happens in the same spot most times I pass through. It also happens on longer trips, left curve of a certain angle. Took it to the dealer, they said they found some bulletin about this that they “fixed” by grinding the surfaces down. Still, after taking another long trip, it still happens, now on the right hand side too. I have no more trust in this truck, every time I turn left I expect to experience the sticky wheel and is freaking me out!

Ram folks, please let us know what’s up with this?! Don’t pull a VW on us.

Same here. 2019 Laramie 4x4 eTorque, no steering assist. It has been back to th dealer twice, the last time they did the ground cleaning bulletin and no change. If anything, it’s worse. For me the truck has to be completely warmed up and it will stick at about 1/8 turn to the left, pretty much every turn. I am also getting the same horrible fuel mileage as everyone else. Taking it back to the dealer tomorrow, they don’t have a plan so it’s likely a waste of time

Over on the other forum, a few people said the fix was a new steering rack.

Yes, they fixed it for me by replacing the steering rack. It feels a little stiffer then before, but nonetheless, the problem is now gone!

Are you guys getting the steering issues pretty much immediately, or after getting some decent miles on it?

It was instantaneous for me, although I didn’t notice it until I drove on winding roads at higher speeds (40mph+)
