Looking for some help. I checked my vin number on the Ram website to identify the towing capability of my 2021 mega cab 6.7 with 3.73 rear end and 68RFE tranny.

That website indicates a max tow rating just shy of 16K. However, the ram towing chart web page says 11,600 pounds. That is quite a difference. Does anyone have an idea which is the correct number and why the discrepancy?

What does your door sticker say? That will be the true number.

Is your truck a 2500 or 3500?

Max tow rating is always a play on words.

Once you answer the question I can show you how to figure out the answer.

You can also go to your door jamb for info.

It will show You GVWR and payload

Take GVWR minus payload to find base weight

Then you will go to the chart to find GCWR.

Then you take GCWR minus base weight

Then you figure in how much you weigh and your hitching systems weight.

This will be your max tow.

Everything you add to the truck will lower the max trailer.

Payload and trailer weight are mutually exclusive.

2500 will be 10k GVWR and 25265 GCWR

3500 will be 12300 GVWR and 28300 GCWR

3500 dually will be 14000GVWR and 28300 GCWR

For instance. Say your truck is a 2500 and your payload is 1800.

10000-1800=8200

25265- 8200=17065.

Usually they do 300 for driver passenger and 90 for hitch and a bit for options that come out to 480lbs.

1800 minus 480 is 1320 for tongue weight. They figure it back at 10%

So max trailer would be 13200.

Once you give us the answer to 2500 or 3500 and your door sticker payload...i will answer your question

Wow. That is a heavy girl.

10000 minus 1660 is a base weight of 8340.

25265 minus 8340 is 16925. This is everything you can add to the truck. Passengers, hitch, tongue weight, trailer, cargo

Since you have less payload than most 1500 trucks you will be limited by payload.

Like I said. They usually give a 480 pound allowance. For instance I weigh 295 and a hitch about 90 pounds. My allowance would be 385...just to move the truck and trailer.

1660 minus 480 is 1180...which means your max trailer would be 11800.

So you said just shy of 16 and 11600

I got 16925 as max towing and 11800 as max trailer

Ultimately, your actual weight...any passengers and any truck cargo will reduce these numbers.

Do you see the difference in the 2 numbers and how They mean something different?

Any thing I can clear up? Let me know

Yup, she is heavy, Mega Cab, air suspension, ram boxes, and other stuff ... it adds up. Thanks for the explanation. Looks like with our stuff - gear, people, fuel, tongue and trailer weight, etc. ... we are still within spec, although barely. We got the truck to travel cross country pulling our boat, 9500 pounds with trailer, but about 800 pound tongue weight. Have a pull coming up from Wisconsin to South Florida in May ( 3000 mile round trip ). Wanted to make sure we were legal and I had my ducks in a row.

Thanks again for the help - really appreciate you taking the time to assist me.

Bob.

Yeah you won't get anywhere near max towing on that truck. You will run out of payload way before that. With most trailers you will be limited to roughly 10,000-12,000lbs towing with typical tongue weight but you would need to weigh your setup at a CAT scale to be sure. Boats have less tongue weight that travel trailers or toy haulers. A 10,000lb trailer will have about 1300lbs tongue weight on average, leaving you only a few hundred pounds for passengers, cargo in the bed, bigger tires and wheels, etc
