Hey everyone. I have a 2500 Ram with the 68RFE transmission.

When the truck downshifts from 5th to 4th gear under a load, it will shift into 4th hard.

I dont remember this happening in the past. I only have 20k miles on it. I am the only owner. I checked the transmission fluid and it smells fine and is at the correct level.

Does anyone have an idea on what this could be? Is it normal? Thank you.

Are you using Tow/Haul when it does this? In my 22 when its in tow mode and using EB I can get some harder down shifts that I don't get when I'm not in Tow mode more so if going down a hill, also it was strongly suggested to service the trans no later then 30K along with a trans quick relearn, also if you have 4x4 service the transfer case at the same time no later then 30K, when I drove my truck after it was serviced the trans shifted a lot better then it did new off the dealers lot...

It mostly happens when driving up a hill. It will do it whether I have tow/haul mode on or off.

It seems to only happen when it needs to downshift to accelerate. It will rev then catch the 4th gear coming from 5th.
