Well, I finally broke down and got my muffler replaced.

Out with the old trashcan, pipe and resonator (more on that later):

First 'new' piece is a repurposed 3G Ram Cummins tailpipe.
Cleaned it up with a wire wheel and painted it with black high head ceramic paint:

(It's only glossy because the paint hasn't flashed yet here, it's a nice semi-gloss finish now)

So, 18" Center In Offset Out Magnaflow, a 3 - 4" adapter and a small piece of 3" pipe later and we're off n running.

From the rear: (that's what she said!)

From the side: (Now we're just getting *****!)

Review: It sounds f*cking amazing at idle, and accelerating. Amazing, f'n love it! I love how the larger pipe (which slipped right into my factory hanger) tucks up nice and close, and ends at an awesome angle to the truck. BUT! Man, cruising around 1,500-1,800 RPMs it has the drone from HELL. I think I understand why there was a big resonator on the truck from the factory.

I am working on a Helmholtz chamber (1/4 wave supressor) to deal with it, but that hasn't gone well so far. More parts ordered, I'll update when that happens.

My other thought is to try n find a factory style resonator and install it upstream to the muffler. Effectively, it shouldn't matter where the resonator is placed.

Very nice!! I like the black paint. Is that rattle can or does it take special equipment to apply?

Very specialized equipment. Takes an old end table to rattle can it on. :waytogo:
It's Dupli-Color Engine Enamel. It dries to the touch in 10-20 minutes, but it doesn't cure until it gets / stays warm. I hit it with the heat gun for a while, mainly because it was right at 50° when I applied it. Seems to have worked just fine.

Well, Finally got my 1/4 Wave supressor installed today.
I have a bit of tuning (changing the length) to do, but Holy mother of hades, It WORKS!

I have to dress the welds and paint it up, but I'll try to get some 'as is' pictures, and I'll warn you, MAN there is some ugly on it!

But, it 98% removed the drone at 1500 RPM, but still has a touch at 1600.
From my calcs, I need to shorten my chamber ~.5" Thankfully, the camber is held on with a band clamp, so I can adjust it as I need. Woot!

Which Magnaflow muffler series did you go with? The XL chambered or Universal? Looks good man.

This is the 'universal' Maggy, not the XL Chambered.
I don't have the PN as the shop who did the original install purchased it.

Here's the chamber in all it's installed glory:

We were setting up the welder on the end cap, but overall, they're decent (nor beautiful) welds.

Then this happened between the pipe and the adapter.
Only thoughts after the fact where maybe I should have prepped the surface WAY better, it just refused to weld. ugly ugly mess.

I just spend about 20 minutes with my angle grinder under there cleaning that mess up.
Looks far better, but the sun is behind the mountains and it got COLD.
Enough under the truck for today!

That being said, with the final length adjustment, there is just the slightest touch of drone for an instant, and then it's gone. I cannot find a constant RPM which produces anything.
EDIT ONE:I am very very satisfied with this chamber and it's effectiveness.
EDIT TWO: This chamber unfortunately is only effective at certain ambient air temperatures, with the drastic shift in temperatures, the drone has fully returned. Ineffective solution.

My buddy and myself are both deeply ashamed at how terrible it came out.
My first weld ever wasn't that ugly! (and it was still pretty ugly!)

Well, after many annoying drives with a f*cking drone; which the above science experiment fixed, but only at certain ambient temperatures, I went back to the original shop, and we re-installed the factory exhaust pipe, with resonator.

It's about 1/3 the volume as before, which is kind of sad, but the drone is gone, and that is a wonderful thing.
This 18" magnaflow now sounds spot on like my '11 did with the 18" mufflex (strange eh?)

I'm content with it, and will stop messing with it now.

I'm gonna be building a 1/4 wave resonator tomorrow. Should work down here in Florida where the temps are always nice.

I've also got the 3" resonator from the single tailpipe I might throw on too.

Wow, nice job I was thinking on just going with the 22 or 24 maggy with the resonator.

Looks good! How did you like that paint? When this was being welded what was you using as a shielding gas? Perhaps your gas was stolen by wind or a fan or some sort of shop ventilation if it was welded inside one?

They work really well for a narrow temp band.
I highly advise using a 90" ID-OD bend like I did.

I kept the same tubing size to maximize the cancelling effect.
Used a 3" hole saw to get the right size hole in the tailpipe.
Then slid the OD portion into the tailpipe, marked it and cut it to match.
Welded it up.

Using the ID portion, I was able to make the chamber 'easily' adjustable.
Worked really well with the band clamp. Could take it off, move it out .5" at a time and see what sounded best. I think I adjusted it all of 7 or 8 times.

It was really weird, because it made the truck quieter overall (cancels the Hz wave, always). Good Luck sir!

With the factory pipe / reso back on, I can just barely hear the exhaust over the engine (stock everything upfront). It's not quite as much as I would have liked, but it still has a nice rumble to it.
