If your going to continue to mod your truck and increase the hp substantially maybe now is the time you should consider going to a 9" Ford rear end. Just another possibility to think about. You may find the parts easier to locate although the install will be substantially more expensive.
Jay

Has anyone done the Ford 9" on the Ram 1500 and does anyone sell it for the truck?

I honestly don't that's what Jay recommended, I've never had an issue with a 9.25.

Why would you want to install a 9"? It isn't stronger or more efficient than the 9.25".

The Ford 9" has "3" pinion bearings it's stronger then most diffs because of that fact. The pinion is supported on a 9" behind the ring gear and the 2 bearings on the pinion shaft. The 12 bolt GM is more efficient then the 9" but won't take the shock loading a 9" will take. The 9" pinion is located towards the bottom of the housing and consequently uses more power to turn the ring gear then a diff with the pinion mounted towards the middle of the housing. I don't think anybody makes a off the shelf bolt-in 9" for our trucks, but any decent driveline shop should be able to fab up the brackets to bolt one in,or one of the aftermarket diff outfits like Strange / Moser will build you a bullet proof 9" that'd be a bolt in. I wouldn't worry about the 9.25 ZF till you exceed 900 rwhp,up to that with a Tru Trac unit it should survive .

My truck will probably never see 900 RWHP, I want to Turbo it but will probably just get Whippled.

I have a 2014 Crew cab 2WD that's going in the shop on Monday to have both of these items done also. I'm really looking forward to getting it done to make pulling my TT easier.
I just heard from the shop doing my install that I already have 3.92 gears! The VIN says 3.21 so I guess the previous owner beat me to it. I was so surprised because when I'm not pulling a trailer I get pretty darn good gas mileage, anywhere from 18-21 on the highway running 70-75mph. They are going to go ahead and put in the LSD, service the rear end and replace the wheel bearing while they have it.

I am well aware of the details of the 9" and it's inherent strengths and weaknesses. The additional bearing and the pinion location both help with pinion deflection but they don't do anything to increase the strength of the pinion shaft which is substantially smaller than the 9.25 (1.5" vs 1.875").

The 9" Ford seems to be the rear end of choice of a majority of the high horsepower racers I have ever known and it seems that lots and lots of professional racers still use that rear end. I think we are getting off track from the original post so I'll quit interrupting.

The biggest issue with the 9.25 ZF is the lack of aftermarket support for it. You can convert it back to the earlier AAM set-up,but most guys seem to balk at the price involved to do that so they can put a True Trac unit in it. Even in stock form other then for a weak limited slip unit,it's plenty strong enough as far as axles / ring and pinion goes,it's just the lack of after market support that hinders it more then anything.

I could wait on Eaton to develop the tru trac for the ZF but I have no patience

This is what I'm waiting for. I have the OEM unit in currently and it does its job. I change the fluid on regular intervals. At some point the clutch packs will wear out or fail. Be nice to drop a truetrac right in before catastrophic failure. Cheaper too.

I was told they don't really fail, they just stop working and become an open diff.

I went through 2 of the stock limited slips, neither one blew up as such, they just quit spinning both rear drag radials in the water box. After the dealer warrentied the 2nd one, they told me they might have a hard time pushing a 3rd one through under warrenty, that's when I bought another complete housing and put a True Trac in it,and threw my rebuilt original diff into storage,as it'll go back under the truck when I get rid of it,and i'll sell this diff with the welded on Illicit relocation brackets and True Trac unit in it,and hopefully recoup some of my expenses .

Yep, I'm not a fan of LSD's, but one interesting thing is that a brand new Mopar anti spin 392 axle is only $2145 through Summit racing, $159 shipping, very tempting!

**** that's a pretty decent price for a new diff. That'd be the way i'd go,as you can install it yourself on a driveway in a couple hours with a floorjack ,then sell your original diff and recoup some of your money.
