I've noticed that I have a slight tick coming from the underside of the engine bay when cold. The tick is not audible listening with the hood open. I can only hear it coming from the underside of the truck.

It will tick for about 30 seconds, and stop. It will not tick again until it sits over night.

I was thinking manifold leak, but I am not sure. Any opinions?

Mine does the same. I've heard it's just how the motor is designed. Apparently the valvetrain is just noisy, you'll get use to it lol.

If anybody else has heard anything different or knows anything more to this please post

Thanks Chris. I was hoping this was the case, because it seems like it stops as soon as the engine idles down.

Lash adjuster tick. Very common on the 4.7's.

I thought at first that it was caused by loose lash adjusters, but I could not hear the tick from the engine with the hood open. Does the sound typically come from under the truck rather than the valve covers?

The motor will grenade. Prepare to replace or sell. If it's not too bad yet, if you religiously change the oil every 3000 miles you may prolong the inevitable. This motor has a design flaw that will prematurely cause the engine to fail.

I change the oil every 15000 miles or so whenever the oil needs it. As long as the oil is still.. well... oily its fine. Once it starts getting chalky I start thinking about changing the oil have been doing it this way on all our vehicles

I'm at 10k on my oil now, I run amsoil oil and filter. The thought of my motor failing due to this tick has never crossed my mind and probably never will. The 08+ 4.7 is a whole different animal

Just an update, the OP has found out that the tick is being caused by the motor being overheated by the previous owner. We have a plan on how this will be fixed..

I've also found that after changing my amsoil filter and using a mopar filter in its place, the tick at startup on my motor is gone. Apparently the mopar filters have some sort of check valve inside.
