So I just got done reading online that some one had swapped out the stock 5.7 cam for a 6.4 on a 2011 ram with no tuning at all, Strait swap. Truck runs fine. And he said its still a small enough lobe diff for the stock PCM to be able to relearn it. However, he did say that he replaced the valve springs, but the 6.4 won't fit. There aftermarket ones. He said the most pain was replacing the springs. My question is. If the cam is not that different, Why would you have to swap the stock springs. I know it's a lot of work. But. From what he says. It's a noticeable butt dyno difference. And that's all that really matters isn't it..........

He ran a 12.44 on nitrous. You are going to need a tuner to run this cam...a custom tune isnt 100% necessary, but you are going to need some form of aftermarket tning to take advantage of the increased air. I would consider this a last resort mod.,,something to do after you have done all the other supporting mods.

Are these new ones are like the 3rd gen Hemi, in that people you were able to swap in 6.1 cams? You had to change the lifters because the 5.7 had MDS and the 6.1 didn't, but I think that was it, right?

no it was a black regular cab, i havent seen the white one yet. Im not looking for nitrous, He claimed he drove it a while with no tuning and the truck ran fine with a noticeable power increase. And as of now, i have an intake magnaflow, bbk shorites within a month, and i figure a cam swap would be a sweet weekend project with the pops before my cross country tranfer and i dont see him for 3 years. The real question was the springs. The cam is under $100 bucks, some say dealers sell it for 70, yes 7-0, not 700. but the springs he used were more expensive than the cam. if the stock springs wont handle it, or will come close then yes i will change them, i just dont see y with a cam thats not (THAT) much bigger than stock, what would happen to the springs? break? valve float? im just not sure

he said the 6.4 ran with MDS with no problem

IMO if i was to swap out for another stock cam i would change spings and lifters, habit i guess . From what i've seen/heard is the stock springs are barely enough for the factoy cam. I plan to swap my cam mid summer and will change mine just for peace of mind. Hope this helps any way possible

Valve spring need to be matched to the cam. I dont know the specs on either cam but i would speculate it has more lift and probably more duration.

The added lift could cause spring bind. You need a certain amount of room before the spring binds and no you cant simply stick a feeler gauge in there to see. The spring must be measured at the installed height and then measured at full coil bind, subtract your lift and there still needs to be room. I dont know what it is for Dodge as every manufacture is different.

Also with this added lift creates more speed on the lifter. This added speed requires more spring pressure to keep the lifter in contact with the lobe of the cam. If this is not set up properly the lifter and cam will destroy themselves at high rpm.

Another measurement that needs to be made for agressive high lift cams is the retainer to guide clearance. Usually only a problem on the really big cams like the one on my chevy .733 lift solid roller.

Sorry I missed this thread till now....

I put the 6.4 cam in my 2011 Ram last year, It ran fine on stock tuning and B&G tuning but im positive a diablo tune or custom tune would wake it up even more. Last time I used the Expensive Manly Nextek Valve springs. This time.. Yes I said this time... I will probably be using the 6.4 Valve springs.
They are the same part number for all 16 springs. (no buying separate Int or Exh springs) they are all the same.
Also the Pushrods, Mds Solenoids, retainers, valve seals, and valve locks are the same as the Eagle 5.7
Lifters and Valves are different.

For those who are interested in doin the swap the part numbers are:
6.4 Cam 5038419AB (auto w/MDS? 5037379BC (without MDS)
6.4 Springs 5037382BC (16)

how long did you run this set up for?...and was it a street/strip...im just curious because i would love to do something like this but im planning on my truck being a daily driver with letting it see the track a few times a year

My trucks are my daily drivers for work... 6.4 cam was well suited for this.

the only other question i have is what gaskets did you need, or fluids, ive read when the water pump comes off it exposes the oil pan and gets water in, Did you have to change the oil, ANd im assuming you were able to reuse the coolant.

and did you remove the heads for the springs? or did you use a spring compressor if so, what kind. thank you in advance, and i am deffinatly looking fwd to this
