I think my 4wd Auto crapped out today... I left my works parking lot and heard some "grinding" coming from under the truck. Kind of sounded like when you grind the transmission on a stick trying to shift. Went away after less then a minute, but felt like I was in 2wd. I got a message on the EVIC "mismatched tire size, 4wd unavailable" or something like that. I put it back into 2wd and drove home. When I went back to work I tried 4wd Auto again and something just doesn't feel right about it. Any ideas???

Are your tire sizes the same? More or less tread on them? They can be picky sometimes, I'd check that first. Then I'd drain the t case oil and see if it smell Burnt or has any metal in it. Try 4lock not auto as lock is basically the same thing as auto just a bit more sensative.

All 4 tires are the same size and bought at the same time, and rotated every oil change. I've been using 4wd Auto and 4wd Lock the last 2 weeks a lot without any issue.... but we are in a cold spell, -37 degrees with wind chill today. I wondered if something froze up maybe and causing the problem???

Yeah cold wreaks havoc on electronics! It's - 44c/-47f here and in that cold if I hit the throttle too hard I get an airbag light and sometimes abs light. Just in extreme cold. Could have been a glitch in the system and the abs may have took over? If it only happened once and hasn't replicated I wouldn't worry too much. But I definately would change t case oil if it hasn't been done in the last year. 4 auto is hard on them, the only thing saving your clutches is a film of oil. Plus then you can see if it's burnt or not.

Also in that cold the front end may have not locked in causing a grinding noise because it was trying to engauge the front diff, the front end didn't see both tires being powered so it thought it was a tire size issue.

Thanks for the help!!! I figure I'll try it again tonight on the way home and see if things feel better.... sounded like rocks in a blender for about 45 seconds!!! Thinking maybe the transfer case didn't want to engage properly cuz of the extreme cold.

Yea they do Brandon.Windchill comes into play when you shut it down at -44 and get in it 20 minutes later and it's cooled off at the rate of the windchill, lol.Once they're totally cold windchill doesn't mean anything, but that in between time when they're cooling off it does, lol.

Well, sounds and feels like something is slipping when I try 4wd auto or 4wd lock. So, guess I’ll be calling the dealership tomorrow to set up an appointment to have them check it out.

Well, both front cv shafts are stripped out at the front differential according to the dealership. Waiting for Maxcare Warranty approval to replace them. Fun stuff!!!

Ah yeah that'd do it! Atleast it isn't a front diff. Cardone makes a HD cv axle if max care dkng cover it.

I’m assuming they make it some the CV joints get destroyed before the differential shafts do???

No I don't think so. Just a ****** design I think. They have alot of slop from factory. When u get the new ones in you will see. Even from brand new they slop around.
