Hey guys I'm new to the forum, although I have read through it several times. I have a 2010 Ram Laramie, I bought it used and thankfully bought the extended warranty. About a month ago I noticed some vibration, while trying to "diagnose" the problem the truck came apart. Apparently the number 8 conn rod failed and knocked a hole in the block. Now Chrysler is trying to give the run around about fixing under warranty. I have read other forums that state this was a common problem with the 5.7, I was wondering if any of you guys have experienced this and what the outcome was

Define "run around" please.

Warranty is warranty - unless you said or did something that was a red flag to them. Or whatever extended warranty doesn't cover certain things.

Well they have had my truck for over 3 weeks, the service manager said there should be no problems covering it when I first took it in. Chrysler wanted the motor torn down for investigation which is understandable. I was asked for service records and I explained that I do my regular maintenance myself, now unfortunately I can't find receipts where I've bought my oil and filters and such. I was told that if I found them it would help my case. I've only had the truck about a year and it was just serviced when I bought it, I've been going by the idiot light as far as when to change the oil. I was told the valve dropped out of the #8 cylinder causing the piston to drop out and sending the conn rod thru the block. I've read numerous forums about this happening with other hemi's so it sounds like a common problem. It just seems like they are trying to find any reason to not pay for a new engine, I thought that's why I bought the warranty. It is the extended power train warranty and I was told it covered any component that made the truck "go" for defects in components or workmanship, sounds like defective components to me because this is definitely not an isolated incidenr

Well I was noticing a slight vibration on the way hoe from work, I came home climbed under and checked everything I knew to check, driveshaft, u joints lug nuts, it was only when I slowed down to around 50 to 45mph that I felt it. So I took it back out on the highway, got up to 60, slowed down, once it got to about 50 it started vibrating but worse this time, only about1 mile from home. I went to speed up a little and heard an awful racket, heard metal parts bouncing off the pavement hitting the bed. I wanted to pile at that point, I knew it was bad. I got outs for looked under the truck and oil was pouring out under the drives side. Crawled under to find about a 2 inch round hole in the block

I googled it and a bunch of stuff came up on edmunds forum, mostly with dutangos with the 5.7, that's why I joined this forum to see if anyone else was having any trouble

I guess I shouldn't have said run around, the service dept at the dealership has been great, very helpful. It's the Chrysler warranty people who are dragging it sit and won't give any info. I can understand they don't want to just throw money away but this truck had been babied, since I've had it anyway

Early hemis had issues with dropping valves from a failed valve spring, but that was the '03-'04 years, it hasn't been an issue since then. Valves still drop but that's the nature of a push rod engine, if a spring or keeper fails, the valve drops. You won the lottery because typically the piston just bends the rod and wrecks the piston/head but yours decided to block the piston which bent the rod. Your rod got depressed and wanted some sunlight to cheer him up.

I don't feel like a winner so far, my truck is still sitting at the dealership and it's still questionable as to whether or not they will cover it

Good luck, they are looking at it as a negligent maintenance and will blame that for the failure since you cannot provide a counter argument with proof to oil changes being done regularly. Without those records you really have no leg to stand on and will be a huge fight and expensive with lawyers involved.
This is why keeping records is the most import thing to do with any home maintenance. I keep every receipt for this reason.
I hope things work out and it gets fixed and can completely understand your frustration with the matter.

Thanks, what gets me though is I've only had it a little over a year, I've changed the oil twice, I'm sure they could test the viscosity of the oil if need be.

RT_Fire is right, they are gonna possibly frame this as negligent maintenance regardless. Even if they test the oil, it is not gonna mean a thing as many who actually are negligent in maintenance, will change the oil before things go totally south.

Only thing I can add is if you have an extensive past buying relationship with your dealer, that can show you buy frequent from them and service with them, they may step up and talk to FCA and do a "goodwill" coverage of the repair but that is still a long shot.

Hope it works out for you.

That is likely your only chance... ask for a oil sample to have tested to get the specs and use that to hold their balls to the fire

I have been a dodge man since '01 bought every one from the same dealer except this one. That is where the truck is now. My wife has a '14 Durango limited from the same dealer which is going in this week for an oil change and service, I'm hoping they will step up, they have been very helpful so far. If not I may have move on to Chevy or ford. The service manager actually told me when I took it in they were having issues with the top end and the valves on the hemi lately
