So I have a 2003 ram 1500 with the 5.9 magnum. 3rd gen body with 2nd gen engine.

What is going on is the engine doesn't get to normal operating temp. When I come down a long hill to my home I can see it drop in temp.

Things I have done. I replaced the water pump, top/bottom hose's, radiator and the thermostat. The water pump was bad and needed replaced.

The overflow bottle on it currently. The vent tube fell off and I can't find a replacement. So I can't fill it without losing fluid from it splashing out.

The 360/5.9 Magnum in your truck is not a 2nd Gen engine. (Just teasin' ya) You just happen to have the last year model of DR truck with a 360 which is awesome.

Now, what does the temp gauge in the instrument cluster show after the truck has been running for 30 minutes?

What thermostat did you install? What temp was stamped on the t-stat?

Do you have an infrared temp gun so you can check the temps on the radiator hoses and the inlet and outlet of the radiator to see what the temps are?

Have you had a scan tool connected to see what the PCM shows for coolant temp? You can swing by your local O'Reilly Auto and connect their Bosch scan tool. Their scan tool will show the Coolant Temp in the data list. I have used it several times before. We need to see what the PCM is seeing. Is the PCM seeing the correct voltage from the coolant temp sensor in the intake manifold? If the temp is correct in the PCM then we know the instrument cluster is not showing the correct temperature.

Thanks for the tips.. I have an Infrared gun I can borrow from work. I'll try that first. So my guage shows that it is between cold and the half way mark. On the 3rd gen guage cluster there is no numbers on it. Just three lines cold, middle and overheating.

Get your hands on the infrared temp gun and verify the temps at the radiator inlet and outlets along with the radiator hoses. Once we determine the actual temps it will give you a direction to go in for further diagnostics.

Thanks again. I will check back in when I have the readings

Sounds good. A few simple checks will tell us what is going on and what steps need to be taken.
