Same with motorcycle tires, over 5 years old, challenging to do anything but change them, gives a great excuse to ride more.

Discount Tire is in the business of SELLing tires…. and is their strongest argument for not handling tires over 6 yrs old.

I’ve run tires (on the spare ranch-vehicles) up to 10 yrs without any problems if they otherwise are in good condition. I’ve got some utility trailer tires over 15 yrs.

But my regular highway vehicles are usually worn-out before 6 years pass.
And my Airstream/Travel-Trailer gets the 6-yr treatment because 1) that type trailer gets very expensive to repair damage from a blow-out, and 2) it’s a single-axle model….and I don’t want to be on the side of the road during a pleasure-trip.

This was my old ‘12 Ram 1500 4.7L Tradesman at Kaibab Nat’l Forest in 2018.

I am a retired engineer from a major tire manufacturer. Tires will continue to cure(vulcanize) with age. This makes the rubber harden and the interior of the tire will deteriorate. That is why there is a 6 year recommendation for replacement and tire sellers will not touch older tires. Do you want to risk your expensive truck (or car) on old tires despite what the tread looks like?

Grams kinda just answered that in the post above haaaaaa…he will run them 15 years on some things, but not over 6 years on something he cares about.

as long as it gets you to a tire shop.my spare is on an ugly oem steel rim and it also has a patch from when I ran over a screw and i had the shop swap it with the original spare.it will stay under the truck as long as I continue to run the same 35's,regardless of the brand or how old it is. mine's a ridge grappler with a couple hundred kilometers on it,but I won't be going with grapplers this spring when I replace them.

I don’t put a lot of miles on my truck .
My nittos are just past 6 yrs ,and have lost any traction on takeoff on wet roads.
I have to let it coast to start moving , or just keep feathering the skinny.
The tires still have good tread , and if I had a 4x4 off road vehicle they would get a new home.

6 year replacement recommendations feel like a good way to sell more tires to me.

I worked in a tire shop for years and they never had this nonsense back then.

I personally replaced a lot of worn out tires that were older than 6 years and never saw anything unusual that would make me want to follow this time schedule.

Like Grams said above I generally would use 10 years as a guideline unless there are signs of cracking and dry rot.

I ran our original travel trailer tires for 12 years because they looked great but finally decided I had pushed my luck far enough and replaced them a few years ago.
