Thinking about upgrading from my 2013 ram with 5.7 hemi to a 2500 with 6.4, not sure if i am going new or used,
A few questions tho
Are there many major probles in the 6.4 like the 4th gen 5.7 had?
Cam shaft, lifters, broken manifold bolts, heater core problems, stuff like that
and any other problems they have.
As stated, just thinking about it right now.
Thank you for any input good or bad

The 6.4 BGE is built like a tank. And the form it comes in the 2500 it'll last a long time. Rarely, if ever, see people posting about issues with them. Cam/lifter issues are extremely rare. The thing most people complain about is the squeeky chirpy noise they make on cold starts, that goes away after a couple minutes.

Get the 6.4l it is a HD engine.

Hemi tick - caused by idling and not changing the oil. Use 0w40 an Lubegard.

If getting used - look at the idle hours - stay away from one with a high number.

They have the exact same issues as the 5.7 has, with even more heater core issues from casting sand then the 5.7's have.Make sure you get one new enough to have the 8 speed, and i'd look into adding an inline coolant filter to the heater hoses.I'd also use 5W-30 Redline in it,instead of PUP 0W-40 ,but if you're hung up on 0W-40 add a bottle of Lubegard to each oil change.5W-30 Redline doesn't shear down like most 0W-40 oils do,and do not run much past 5,000 miles on your oil changes, cheaper to bite off the cost of early oil changes then it is to bite off a cam and lifter job

I saw this morning the Hemi they are bringing back is going to be for the bigger model trucks only. Made the world news this AM, looks like the SST will be sticking around for awhile.

Not sure what you mean by "for the bigger model trucks only". They are bringing back the 5.7 hemi w/ etorque as an option for all 1500 models except for the RHO and Tungsten varieties. And yes, they are also keeping both Hurricane versions as well.

Have 138k on my 16 6.4 only problem I've had is the map sensor crapping out on me and ironically a few months later map sensor crapped out on my uncles 14 3500 with 6.4. His has way less miles though. Redline 5w30 every 4-5k now that I don't drive mine much and redline c+ in the 66rfe.

Engine architecture is basically the same isn’t it, even though it’s a different block casting. So seems the cam/lifter issues would be common. I wonder if the 6.4 utilizes a higher volume oil pump as standard for HD use. That might help with the cam/lifter issue somewhat.

Same oil pump. The size or volumn of the oil pump doesn't have squat to do with the cam / lifter issues.A little research other then Re-ignited video will tell you, there is "No" pressurized oil fed to the cam lobes or lifter roller, they're strictly lubricated by the oil flung off the crankshaft. You get more oil onto them by upping the idle rpm,not by sticking a high volumn pump on the end of the crankshaft.Spend about 24 minutes and watch both these video's,and you'll know more about the hemi's oiling system, and it's shortfalls then most guys, and you'll also see why a high volumn pump doesn't do much in a hemi.

There are a lot of differences - 6.4l forged cam; 5.7l not.

They don't use any differant cam material between any of the engines, except the real early 6.1's,they apparently came through with a billet cam.The 6.4 has a "Forged crankshaft",while the 5.7 utilizes a "Cast crankshaft". They both utilize the same oiling system, the only real differances between a BGE truck 6.4 and a BGE car 6.4 is the ramp profiles on the camshaft, and the compression ratio's. The truck 6.4 is 10:1 compression ratio and the car 6.4 is 10.9:1 compression ratio, and of course the factory tunes are differant for each application.
As far as the problems the OP is worried about, the 5.7 and 6.4 have the same issues, with the 6.4 seeming to have more issues with casting sand plugging the heater core then the 5.7's have
Not sure where you get your info from, but alot of it is wrong Dude.

I had nearly 100k miles on my 2018 when I traded it for my 2023, which now has 42k miles. Between the two of them I've had to replace one starter. Never had an issue with them. Except gas stations...they absolutely hate passing a gas station; always wanting to stop in and see how their gas tastes, lol. I'm hope Ram will go back to making mega cabs with the 6.4.

Yeah, I watched all those videos last week (or week before - time flies) and understand the cam/ lifter angle/height, center oiling gallery, lack of splash, lack of oiling through the lifters to the rollers and cam, etc. Just wondering why some were saying the 6.4 didn’t suffer from the same issues. The only easy thing I could come up with was maybe for HD use they went to a high volume pump in the 6.4 which might send more oil down the push rods to the lifter cup to overflow and flood in greater volume down the outside of the lifter and maybe spread a little higher on the lifter body in the bores and then make its way down to the rollers and cam. But from your experience it sounds like it’s an illusion that the 6.4 isn’t suffering from the same ailments from the valve train design and oiling as the 5.7. So mystery solved.

The 6.4's have the same issues as the 5.7's do.The only reason you don't see that many 6.4's with issues,is there's not near as many of them on the road, and alot of the ones that are on the road are working right from when they're first started , and don't have the same percentage of idling hours as alot of 5.7's have , that are just daily driver grocery getters. As long as you're working a Hemi and keeping it in the 2500+ rpm range it's a pretty decent engine,it's when it subjected to short trips where it doesn't get fully warmed up , and might see 1500 to 1700 rpm at most that it'll have more issues. The hemi's not an engine that likes to be babied,it's happier if you beat on it a bit and use that skinny pedal like you're a teenager again :Big Laugh:

As a non-mechanic, I can just tell you that I have a 2018 2500 with the 6.4 and I change oil everytime the truck tells me to, about every 5k miles. The only problem I had is that it'll eat a battery in a couple of months of not driving it without a battery tender. Then, so will my wife's Grand Cherokee with the v6 in it. Now that I daily my truck it's one of the glorious things in my life that just works everytime I use it and I don't have to worry about it other than routine maintenance.

When it’s really cold min has a tick. Lasts less than about a min. Dealer can’t find it.since it disappears before the get it in the shop. I got the truck used from them in the summer.

2015 3500 with a 6.4. Lifter failure and ate the cam at 80,000. R And R and had to do it again 3000 later due to faulty replacement lifter. All parts Oem but pistons. Still get misses at cold start. It’s been a nightmare. Like the rest of the truck but I’ve seen too much about cam/lifter failure to buy another
