No codes?
first thing is always check the fluid level. You need a working e brake because it has to be in neutral to get an accurate reading.

I have had my truck do similar things, turn it off then restart and all is fine. It’s been a long time since I’ve had this happen . I right it off as a glitch and forget about it.

I know my 8 speed was shifting weirdly and unpredictably. It was a low fluid issue as others mentioned. I would check fluid level first. I fluid change might help things out as well if that hasn't been done in awhile.

Stuck in 4th usually isn't the problem but is the tranny going into "limp mode". Why is it doing that? Could be lots of different things going on.

I've had two failed transmissions on my 2014 Hemi/HD and can tell you CELs are pretty scarce. The first failure I was on a busy freeway in stop/go traffic and all of the sudden it started slipping really bad. I made it to an off-ramp and got to a parking lot and it was barely moving. As I was parking I lost all forward gears and had to back into the lot. Finally, as I was in a spot after the tranny was completely fried the CEL came on. Great.... thanks for the warning :)

The second failure was less dramatic but it did keep going into limp mode and I never got any CELs.

If fluid is full the issue is most likely in valve body and it weather in limp mode or loss of od clutches, the od clutches will happen first most of the time and generally is a good thing compared to a total transmission failure. You can get a kit and a plate and fix everything, or just buy a new valve body and pop it in. Might be a good idea to replace solonoid as well, replace oil filter thread in transmision with a metal one, the oem is actually plastic and is a bad joke. Get a second opinion from a trans shop.
