Every once in a while when driving easy at moderate speed maybe 20 to 40 mph when I approach a stop sign or stop light and let off the gas I get a slight Spike im RPM. Only about a 150 rpm jump right when I let off the gas pedal. If I ease it off very slow it doesn't happen. It is very short and happens very fast

Anyone else?

I get the same thing , only difference is mine spikes a bit after I've coasted for maybe two -three seconds

Can you describe it more. How is it spiking when you are coasting? Like has you foot been off the gas for a few seconds already and THEN it does it?

It is the torque converter clutch disengaging and the load on the engine from the transmission is reduced and hence the slight spike in RPM. It is normal.

Straight from the owners manual:

Torque Converter Clutch

A feature designed to improve fuel economy has been
included in the automatic transmission on your vehicle.
A clutch within the torque converter engages automatically
at calibrated speeds. This may result in a slightly
different feeling or response during normal operation in
the upper gears. When the vehicle speed drops or during
some accelerations, the clutch automatically disengages

It is also my opinion that this is where some of the "clunking" is heard when people are in the sweat spot of either the Torque Converter clutch is in the transition of being engaged or disengaged and a rapid excel/decel event is then induced by the operator, the Torque Converter Clutch then clunks.

I assumed it was the torque converter just wasn't sure if it was normal.
Thank you

Yes , foot off pedal for two - three seconds while costing , then it spikes about 150.-200 RPM s ....it's done it for ever , I only see it every once and a while , seems to be more often in the winter time ? Maybe not ... cooler xsmn fluid ...

I do notice it a littlle more now since I installed my Carven Competitor Series Exhaust LOL ! It's a bit louder

The owners manual goes into quite some detail on theory of operation. Cold temps play a big role in operation of the Torque Converter Clutch. Explains a lot of why these six speeds are finicky until fluid temps come up.

Explains a lot for me too. With as cold as it's been I've been going straight into tow haul mode the entire time unless I'm on the highway. That helps with a lot of the shifting problems.

@R.L.K., can you take a pic of the inside of the pan? I can't remember if the drain hole in the MH pan sticks up at all...
Here ya go buddy !

Just some baffles / internal cooling fins and that strong ass magnet on the drain plug .

Thanks man that's just was I was looking for! I meant to take pics of mine but forgot.

Looks like that is just a threaded hole which is great because all the fluid will drain. A drain plug kit opening will sit 1/4" to 3/8" above the bottom of the pan.

And yes that drain plug magnet is strong! I didn't even bother putting my stock magnet in. Plus I really didn't want it floating around in the pan since it won't stick to aluminum.

So today it's 9° OAT & my xsmn is struggling to get to 100° on a 20 mile trip . (6speed)

So I'm paying a bit more attention to my slight rpm spikes , it seems to happen most consistently with cooler xsmn temp ( as said above by Hoot) for my 65RFE when I'm coasting long enough for the engine rpms to stabilize at about 1500 rpms @ about 45 mph shortly after I apply light pressure on the brake pedal I get the 200 - 300 slight rpm spike .
This is normal per the owners manual .

I think I just notice it more now because of colder oat for winter time and I now have a louder Carven Exhaust

My 6.4, 66RFE often has the RPM spike when coasting. Everything I've read says that's normal, as the truck will try to hold the current speed when you let off gas. What happens is when you let off the gas and the truck notices a speed increase, it will downshift to try to hold at the same speed.

Nothing looks better on the kitchen counter than a new transmission pan[emoji3]!!! (My wife was like, WTF dude, take that **** out to the garage).

I've been following this thread for a while and decided to pull the trigger.....What a nice pan the MH is. I also have the MH rear diff cover as well, and they are very well made.

Looks like I'll have to wait a couple weeks to install, but I'll post up some pics of the process. Thanks for all the information, this thread is 65rfe gold.
