I have 2015 ram 1500 sport with the 5.7 Hemi. Truck has around 60k miles I do ton of towing. Just noticed last week going to Florida towing a boat when my truck downshift from 6 to 5 it bangs violently feels like a little slip and bangs hard into 5th gear. Owner Manual says life time oil. I read through the forums that some of u change the oil. Do u think oil is shot, bad valve body or trans starting to go. When there no load on the truck I can drive it hard and it won’t bang into 5th gear but when towing it does. I’m heading back to Florida this weekend towing another boat there. Has anyone else had this problem I see everyone complaining about the 1 2 shift I have that very slightly since day 1

I doubt the fluid is shot.

Are zf8 fluids "lifetime" thread. Even if you use the real pao oils, they aren't lifetime fluids. However, they may protect the trans from hot temps. When you tow you need to post the temps for better solutions. How hot does the thing get? How heavy do you tow and what gears? Do you use tow haul button everytime?

Not many (if any) people on this site have experience with the 8 speed, but, the fluid in your tranny should have life for a few more months if not years.

I think there’s a relearn procedure for the ZF, but that i’m sure can only be done from the dealer.

I kinda read through your post really quick, so, do you have any CELs?

Another thing that sucks about the 8 speed is the lack of being able to check trans health with CVIs!

You might want to start saving some money, lol. You could try a relearn ,but the tranny might be giving you signs it's not long for this world. That was what mine did initially a couple more dragstrip passes later it was basically toast.Drop the pan and filter and see what the fluid looks like and if it has a burnt smell to it.

Isn’t 8K lbs toward the upper end for what a 1500/5.7 should be towing? I’m not real knowledgeable on all the ins and outs of towing with these trucks, but that sounds like 2500 towing territory to me.

Yea it’s on the limit. I towed couple other boats of mine at 10k plus lbs but for couple miles to ramp. When I tow I don’t kill it. I drive it normal.
