98 Cummins swap with 01 Cummins

hi everyone I just got this truck but isn’t running because the previous owner swap
The 98 engine with a newer 01
He says that I will need a new ecm but I don’t know what kind of ecm because I can’t go by the vin #.
What can I do??

Because it’s a different engine it was a 98 originally and he swapped with a 01

Well I’m also forgot that he give this ecm with a the truck

You should be able to buy an ECM for a truck of the proper year and engine configuration, or maybe even find one in a junk yard if you are lucky.
