Hello All,
Looking at buying some new rubber...Currently running A/Ts but curious about some M/Ts.... Has anyone done the switch from one to the other? Also is there really much of a difference between the two? Thoughts an Opinions Please
Thanks in advance,

The main difference is that the MT's are heavier and louder than the AT's and some MT's might not give you as good winter traction as AT's.

But the MT's just look so much cooler and if you find the right one, you can mitigate a lot of those above differences.

I've got the Cooper STT Pro's and they are lighter and quieter than many of the MT's and have the siping to handle the winter driving.

I also have the Duratracs (AT tire) for winter in a smaller size and they aren't much quieter than the Coopers.

I had Toyo Open Country AT II’s on my Ram before switching to Toyo MT’s and the difference is pretty drastic. I jumped up in size also, so, my results will differ from someone who runs a stock size tire on theirs.

Obviously, the tread on the MT’s is far more aggressive and much deeper.

I switched to 35’s on 17’s but I highly doubt a smaller size Toyo MT would be any quieter. These MT’s sing loud and proud when cruising down the road which doesn’t bother me. I was expecting that, plus the drop in gas mileage.

The traction so far is phenomenal. I’ve driven a lot in pouring rain lately with them and they seem to grip the road so much better than the AT II’s did.

The AT’s had incredible tread life and traction was good when the weather wasn’t too bad... but my rear tires would break loose in rain & snow a lot when driving normally. (Around turns, and sometimes on straightaways usually uphill)

The AT II’s were very quiet until they started getting down to the 7/32’s range, but still not overly noticeable like the MT’s. I personally love having the MT’s on now. I liked the AT’s but, in my opinion and personal experience, the MT’s have already outperformed them.

I have yet to see how the tread life is, they are holding up very well so far. I’ve only have them on for about 3 months now so it’s still early.

I haven’t had experience with any other brand on my truck since I’ve had it, so, I can’t give you an opinion on any other brands. There are a lot of Ram owners running Nitto’s, BF Goodrich, Falken, etc. I’m sure you’ll get some good feedback on some of those.

for some reason when I saw the name of this thread, I thought Automatic transmission vs manual transmission. I was intrigued, because I don't know the last year you could get a manual in the Ram.

Pretty happy with my General Grabber X3s, I bought for the aggressive looks over a AT.

Like has been said the MT will normally be heavier and louder and might not ride as nice.

I would say MT will get you a bit less fuel economy and like said, tend to wear out faster on top of being noisier. But they look cool!!

Ran an A/T (ATP) hybrid (ST Maxx) and mud terrain (STT PRO) - all cooper and all on this same truck

The ATP's got the best mileage and were the most quiet - but were also the smallest size

ST Maxx made some noise and weren't the best in the rain.

STT Pro are at the same noise level, still look brand new after 10,000 miles, are amazing in the rain, and just the best all around for how I use the truck on the farm etc. - They also look the coolest

I say coolest wins the day.....cause that's why we're all wheeling around in Rams.

Lol I'm very happy with them. I have noticed they're very particular about what PSI to run though. I keep them at 35 and they seem to be the happiest at that PSI

Main difference will be MPG,mileage, weight, price, offroad performance,looks..
I'm in the AT bandwagon at the moment, and more than happy as my truck is not a rock crawler like my Jeep was, AT will give you better MPG, less noise, better rain/light snow traction, better overall all around performance in almost all conditions except sticky mud/heavy snow/heavy rocks.

MT tires will give you better traction in mud/rocks and heavy snow, and overall a much better tire for more aggressive offroad, MT's will wear out quicker, some can be very noisy, although tire noise doesn't bother me much, worst MPG, some might drive a little funny depending on how big big/deep the lugs are, look best in pretty much anything you want to mount them.

You can't go wrong with either option for the most part, is really up to you and want you want out of your tires, some options are better depending on driving/weather conditions, so you can lean towards something that will suite your needs much better if needed, or simply go for the look.

Have fun.

What you need to consider is mileage that you will get out of a set. Remember, when it comes to tires, you get what you pay for.

Mud terrains are the best for mud, rocks and deep snow with their large tread voids that clear out easier. Ice, rain and otherwise slippery surfaces they are relatively poor. Good all terrains work well in all conditions, but not the best in any. Decent in snow, but not as good as actual snow. Good in mud, but not as good as mud terrains. Good on pavement, but not as good as a good performance or all season tire. I run mud and pavement a little more than 1/2 the year and snow and ice the rest so I run snow tires in the winter and go with the slightly more aggressive nitto ridge grapplers for the rest of the year at rhe moment. Or at least I will once I sell my older truck that I've been running SRAs on since the new truck came with them and the old one needed tires.
