So I am in the midst of building a prerunner and I am worried about the air bags being a little too sensitive and going off when I am off-roading. Is there a way I could straight up just disable them? I know this becomes a safety issue but this truck never sees the road anymore, I trailer it everywhere. Also while we are on the subject I am looking to put on a performance steering wheel on instead of the bulky stock steering wheel. How many issues am I going to have with potentially swapping out the stock steering wheel?

I would assume there is an SRS system fuse. I would also assume that removing said fuse would render the entire airbag system disabled. I would furthermore assume that this is for educational purposes only and that one would never operate a motor vehicle with an intentionally disabled safety system on a public roadway. Or at all, for that matter.

As for the steering wheel, they come off fairly easily. Your main issue is going to be with the clock spring. The ones I experienced only turn so many revolutions each way. Go too far and you pop the spring which makes it trash. If its put back on and its off center, you're going to have issues.

Also, its highly recommended to disconnect the battery for several minutes before attempting to remove the airbag from the steering wheel.

PS: I'm sure you're all familiar with what they say about assumptions. I've never tested the theory that pulling the airbag fuse will completely disable the system, nor do I accept responsibility if a presumably disabled airbag deploys unintentionally. Not that one would even think about operating a vehicle with a disabled airbag system...

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the fuse. And I do agree no one should operate a vehicle on public roads without air bags. Like I stated before I do not drive this truck on public roads I trailer it to sand dunes and trailer it home. But thank you for your concerns.
